How to Stay Active Without the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

New year, new you? While many of us make resolutions to stay healthy and active, who actually accomplishes these? Nobody. Why? Because they’re unrealistic. You are busy people with lives to live and fun to have. Who has the time and money to go to the gym? Fortunately, it turns out that you don’t actually have to go to the gym. Below are a number of everyday chores you can do in order to stay active.

1. Shoveling snow

Area(s) Targeted: Shoulders, arms, back, neck

Time: Depends on the amount of snowfall

*Great for those who like not being able to pick up cups and pens for the next day or two

2. Putting on duvet covers

Area(s) Targeted: The whole body

Time: An entire afternoon

*Don’t do if you like your free time and sanity intact

3. Doing the dishes, especially the pots and pans with food stuck to them

Area(s) Targeted: Forearms

Time: 30 minutes

*Great for people who love dry, cracking hands

4. Dusting

*Don’t do if you consider dust bunnies your pets

5. Cleaning the bathroom

Time: 30-60 minutes

*Great for people who like the germs of other people

6. Laundry
