How to Get Involved during Sexual Assault Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Berks chapter.

As we approach the month of April, our minds are typically concerned with ending the semester with a bang, getting ready for summer break and focusing on what summer jobs to apply for. However, we tend to forget what the meaning of this month can mean for some men and women around the world and even on our campus. We forget about how some might be impacted in some way, shape or form throughout this month because April is actually Sexual Assault Awareness month.

This is the time when people all around are focused on preventing sexual crimes among their communities and schools. Colleges are among the most common places where sexual assault could occur. A recent survey of college students showed that 23% of female students reported encountering some form of sexual assault or misconduct, according to the Association of American Universities (AAU).

As Penn State Berks students, we have the opportunity to participate in events all month long to become educated and aware of the dangers and risks we are in every single day. “Sex in the Dark,” Stay SAFE Program” and “Sexual Assault Awareness Program” are among the events being held over the course of April. To find out more about these events, visit the Penn State Berks site for a description of each event being held.
