Closedown Rules in a Nutshell

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Berks chapter.

Next week, we begin to take all of our finals and prepare to move out of the residence halls. Moving out is commonly known as “closedown” here at Penn State Berks. Before you rush out of the door to head home, there’s a few things you’re required to do in order to avoid any housing charges on your bursar account. A common mistake students make is not properly checking out of their rooms, so go through the checklist below to make sure you’re really prepared to leave for the semester!

  • Move all furniture back to its original place- We all do it! We move in and feel the place needs a little updating, so we move our furniture around to make us feel more at home. Although that is all okay, make sure to move everything back just the way it was when you moved in. if you find it a little hard to remember, just use the best of your knowledge! Don’t worry; no housing charges will come with not remembering exactly where everything was!
  • Wipe down the inside of all drawers as well as the micro fridge and microwave- Honestly, no one wants to leave the place filthy, right? It is important that you wipe down these areas just in case there’s a little dirt or food left behind. If the housekeepers find a fridge full of spilled milk, they’ll have no problem with charging you! Also, make sure to put the micro fridge’s temperature to the lowest setting!
  • Take out all trash- This one’s a no brainer! Take out all trash bags to the designated dumpsters and recycling. They’ll eventually be moved behind Cedar and Sage/Sweetwood Halls. Remember, each bag of trash left behind is worth $25 per bag!
  • Remove your wall décor- Don’t forget to take home those movie posters and other wall décor! There should be absolutely nothing on the walls after you’re all moved out!
  • Properly check out- If you’re ready to leave during Housing’s normal business hours (8am-5pm), call (610)-396-6353 to request to have a housekeeper check you out. If you plan to leave after 5pm, simply return your room key to the Ivy desk in Residence Life (102 Ivy), write down your name, room number and hall on the small, yellow envelopes and place it inside the key box.
