Being an Ambivert

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Berks chapter.

I used to be pretty much a complete extrovert. Once I hit high school, I started morphing into an ambivert and remain that way today.

What does that mean?

I can be outgoing, kind of loud at times, and not afraid to talk to people. But there’s also the side of me that won’t go near strangers to talk to them and a side that doesn’t do too well with people my age.

I usually will participate in class but I get happy when I get to go home. I get grumpy if I have to stay extra for meetings because I just want to go home and put on my fuzzy socks.

Conversely, I love to dance.

I can’t dance.

Same thing goes for singing.

I was at a wedding in October and I was on the dance floor for most of the wedding. I led the drunk Electric Slide. Just because I don’t talk to everyone all the time doesn’t mean that I don’t like to have fun.

I was self-nominating for a leadership position one time and people started doing The Wobble (it’s our thing). I hated doing it. I love having an audience but I was far from okay with doing The Wobble.

The beach is the same way. I LOVE the beach. I like to read books, but I really like to wander around and visit people. I’ve known the people forever. I’m comfortable around them. I once had a neighbor introduce me to someone by saying, “She’s going to be Carrie Bradshaw.”

It was awkward because that’s a lot to live up to, but that’s a great intro.

There have been studies that say that being an ambivert is a good thing, but I’m still trying to figure that out.
