Nine Things to Do Around SUNY Oswego

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

When people hear Oswego, they either don’t know what or where it is and if they do know what it is, they don’t think of it as a lively place. But don’t let that be an excuse to not find some fun and adventure.

Here are 9 things to do around our campus, SUNY Oswego!

  • Bev’s Dairy Treat Ice Cream Shop

Take advantage of the warm weather in the beginning of the semester by visiting Bev’s Dairy Treat where you can choose from a variety of ice cream flavors and milkshakes. It’s right along the lake, so you will have an amazing view along with your delicious treat.

  • Ontario Orchards

You can go to Ontario Orchards to pick apples right off of a tree for only $5 a bag! It’s a nice family activity, but you can also enjoy this experience with friends.

  • The lighthouse

Just a fair warning, going to the lighthouse can be a bit of a challenge with all the rocks you have to climb up and jump across. Walking to the lighthouse is an adventure on its own, so if you consider yourself adventurous, try this out.

  • Coffee Connections

Coffee shops are a great place to get work done or just have long conversations with close friends. It’s a coffee shop set up as if you’re walking into a home; There are couches, shelves filled with books, and when you enter, the ceiling is covered with designs by a former local student!

  • Canada

Who doesn’t want to say that they traveled to another country over the weekend? If you have a passport handy, it won’t be that difficult to take a quick trip to Canada and explore everything it has to offer.

  • Watch the sunrise

Oswego is known to have some killer sunsets, but do people ever wake up early just to catch the sun rise? Sunrises can be just as or even more beautiful than sunsets so the next time you decide to take a morning run, see if you can catch a glimpse of the sun starting to brighten up the city.

  • Stargazing

The perks of Oswego not being a cosmopolitan city like New York City, is that you can actually see a multitude of beautiful stars. Looking up at the night sky will remind you how small you and your problems are.

  • Mini road trips to Ithaca (Buttermilk Falls)

Ithaca has a lot of awesome nature walks and areas to hike if you’re in the mood to be one with nature. Take a trip to Buttermilk Falls which is only about 2 hours away from campus and enjoy the waterfall and the peaceful hike.

  • Hammock

The most calming thing to do on campus is definitely setting up a hammock on a couple of trees! Start reading that book you’ve been putting off, sketch the view you’re looking at, or just enjoy the view and serenity and you’ll instantly feel less stressed and overall much happier.

No matter where you go to school or where you live, there is always an opportunity for some adventure in your life. You just have to be willing to search for it and explore.
