The Best Ways to Get Involved on Campus NOW

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

Getting involved in some sort of club or organization during college is one of the best moves you can make.  You get to meet new people, make connections that might help you in your career, and do something you love!  The best part about college clubs is that there’s something for everyone, so check out these great orgs below to find one that fits you.

Leadership

Look no further than Students Today, Leaders Forever (STLF).  The OSU chapter of STLF was started a few years ago by a small group of students, and it is the first collegiate chapter on the West Coast! During spring break, STLF embarks on a Pay It Forward Tour, which is an 8-9 day road trip that includes service projects in five cities.  This year’s destination is Santa Cruz, CA.  Registration for the tour opens November 21, 2014.

Volunteering

There are countless opportunities for volunteers in Corvallis, and you don’t even have to leave campus! The Center for Civic Engagement has a database of all the wonderful opportunities available at Oregon State, so be sure to check them out!

Outside of campus, Start Making a Reader Today (SMART), the Heartland Humane Society, and Habitat for Humanity are other ways to help the community while having fun.

Greek Life

As a member of the Greek community, you participate in fun philanthropic events, volunteer at both local and national levels, and constantly meet tons of ambitious, intelligent and talented people.

There are many ways to get involved in Greek Life.  There are housed and non-housed organizations as well as ones that are based on your major or interests. Check out the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life to learn more about the many types of Greek organizations here at Oregon State.

Music/Literature/Art

If you love to sing, consider auditioning for Divine or Bella Voce. These all-female vocal groups are an awesome way to meet new people and sing your pretty little heart out.  If you play an instrument, consider trying out for the Marching Band!  Music + school spirit = FUN.

If you’re into writing, there are lots of opportunities for you to enter and enjoy the written word here on campus as well. The Daily Barometer, Her Campus Oregon State, Beaver’s Digest and DAMchic are a few examples of publications you can get involved with here at OSU.

If you’re artistic, Prism Magazine has positions available for graphic designers, art editors and literature editors. OSU’s Photography Society is also a great way for photographers of all skill levels to develop their skills while making friends.

Athletics

Intramural sports are a fun and easy way to meet new people while participating in the sport you love! You can choose from bowling, flag football, volleyball, basketball and many other easygoing options. Games are in the evenings, and there are always teams looking for players.  Check out the Rec Sports website for more details on how to find and join a team and what sports are available.

No matter what you decide to get involved with on campus this year, make sure it is something that interests you! If you join a program just to join a program, it may become more of a stressor than a way to have fun. Try as many or as little programs as you would like, but be sure to make the most of your college experience while you have the chance!
