Why TLC’s ‘Outdaughtered’ is an Unexpectedly Perfect Binge for College Students

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

Are you a twenty-year-old Grandma? The mom of your friend group? Or maybe just someone in need of a smile? If any of these apply, then TLC’s Outdaughtered is a show that you need to check out. The series follows the Busby family through their adventures with six daughters, five of whom are the only set of all girl quintuplets in the country. Danielle and Adam Busby lead the clan, with big sister Blayke, Ava Lane, Olivia Marie, Hazel Grace, Riley Paige and Parker Kate. If that sounds like a mouthful, you will be even more floored as you watch this show and see the ins and outs of daily life with six children.

This show is similar in style to countless other TLC hits, but strikes a chord with viewers because of the purity and love that this family exudes. It is reminiscent of Jon and Kate Plus 8 (later Kate Plus 8), but without the yelling and bickering, and features a close knit family, like 19 Kids and Counting, but with traditions more relatable to the average viewer. Episodes are filled with family vacations, birthday parties, Adam and Danielle’s countless attempts at teaching their children responsibility, and even average tasks that become extremely difficult when six tiny humans are involved. Never short on love and happiness, you will feel your spirits lift after each episode. The Busby’s are a genuinely kind family, and while this show is probably geared more towards the mom demographic, I find it to be particularly comforting as a college student.

We live in a world that is fast paced and bombarded with news that makes us feel like society is worsening. These sentiments are often present in a lot of the media that we consume. However, watching Outdaughtered each week feels like a breath of fresh air. For an hour, I can relax and remember that there is still goodness left in this world. After all, what is more heartwarming than watching a bunch of sweet sisters and their loving family? While the Busby’s face hardships, they always have the support of their extended family behind them, and Adam and Danielle work together like a true team. Navigating your twenties can feel lonely and confusing, and it is comforting to tune into a stable family show for an hour each week, especially if you are missing your own while away at school.

Additionally, these little ladies are as sweet as can be. Having a sister myself, I love watching shows that celebrate sisterhood and the complexities and joys of the relationship. It is safe to say that this family has captured my heart, and I guarantee that you will fall in love too. Happy binging!

Episodes are available through the TLC Go app and on the TLC website for streaming. Be sure to catch up before season 5 airs this summer!
