I Left My Phone At Home For A Day In NYC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MMM chapter.

In an effort to try to find some independence from the iPhone that is usually glued to my side, I decided to set out on my average day without my beloved cellphone. To document the experience, I listed my many thoughts throughout the day below.

  • This is going to be fine. I’m an independent woman and I don’t need an iPhone.
  • But, leaving my phone on the dresser just felt so wrong.
  • How am I supposed to know if there’s an emergency?
  • What if the zombie apocalypse happens today???????????
  • Listening to the sounds of the city… totally not a substitute for Ed Sheeran.
  • It’s amazing the things Spotify can tune out.
  • Like the sound of children screaming.
  • Using a real live credit card to buy my Dunkin iced tea. This is new.
  • Almost to school, I’m really doing it.
  • I am here to LEARN without distractions.
  • Wait, what am I going to do during the 15-minute class break??
  • Doodle in my notebook. That’s what I’m going to do.
  • Did doodling die out because of cellphones?
  • Yet another way the youth is creatively suppressed by technology.
  • Ok, class is over. I have made it.
  • Me saying goodbye to everyone who did not just complete this fantastic test of will:
  • Next challenge = the subway.
  • This is going to be brutal.
  • Oh no, I can’t pretend not to hear the people asking for money.
  • I am SO BORED. This train is moving SO SLOW.
  • Let me off of this rattling death trap.
  • Probably a bad idea to go somewhere I’ve never been before without a GPS.
  • My sense of direction can kick in anytime now…

  • I can practically hear my dad saying, “What do you think we did when I was a kid?”
  • Made it to my destination without having to ask for help so I’m feeling very accomplished.
  • The sight of home is so welcome and honestly I can’t wait to get my hands on my precious little iPhone AND I’M NOT ASHAMED TO ADMIT IT.
  • Well, maybe a little ashamed.
  • It was nice for a few minutes to be phone-free, but at this point I’m feeling pretty out of the loop with the entire world.
  • …and I have no new texts. Surprise, surprise.

  • 0/10 will not try this experiment again.
  • The plus side is now I have a whole day of social media to catch up on.
