New York Fashion Week’s Biggest Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

New York is not only the city that never sleeps, it’s home to host the world’s most famous fashion icons. It’s officially that time of year, from parties to photoshoots and runway shows, New York Fashion Week is where rags turn to riches. Let’s take a look at what the biggest trends of 2022 are going to be.

Mini skirts. You heard it here folks, mini skirts are back and shorter than ever. So far during New York Fashion Week, we’ve seen the mini skirt in a variety of designs and materials appropriate for the chillier months, including  Dauphinette’s ruffled tennis style, Kim Shui’s fuzzy and small variations, and Christian Cowan’s tweed skirt.

The itsy bitsy hemline was first popular in the 1970s and 1980s, defying norms of society at the moment, although throughout popular culture history, we’ve seen the scandalous look get even smaller, with celebs ranging from Pamela Anderson in the ’90s, who had been frequently wearing mini skirts, to other icons such as Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears circa early 2000s. Ever since, several of this generation’s most popular celebrities, like Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Fox, Bella Hadid, and numerous more, have been photographed in this style as well. We’ll be seeing a lot more of this tiny skirt throughout the fall and winter as well.

Anna Sui created a collection that combines neon houndstooth prints, sequin mini skirts, massive sweaters, chunky stomp boots, and tons of pins. Her collection fits the theme of the contemporary British rock show, Ready, Set, Go!

Street style is hotter than ever. Retro-futuristic fashion (streetwear) is one of this season’s most prominent runway trends, with designers Maisie Wilen and Christian Siriano displaying their fashion interpretations of what a post-pandemic society will look like. Post-pandemic is now getting referred to as a “semi-dystopian” era. It’s no wonder that the streets have already begun to express this.

As seen in retro-futuristic fashion, leather has taken over NYFW. It’s clean but grungy, and sexy but chic. Gabriela Hearst designed leather trench coats that were embellished with Bolivian crochet and leather lace that matched the designer’s sketches. American sportswear with a tougher edge is what Tory Burch presented with a pair of beige leather pants and a slimmed clean black leather jacket.

It seems as though the world of fashion took a time machine back a few decades. Here’s a blast from the past, thin eyebrows. During this week of NYFW, T.Cooper, the makeup artist for the Tia Adeola presentation, chose tiny brows for each model to let the eyeshadow be the star of the show.

Michael Kors brought a sexy-luxury look to the stage. The size of the cuff, the tininess of the armhole, and the proportions of the shoulder are all well-considered details. This is before you even look at the inside of the garments: French-seamed hemlines, a spacious silk pocket, and big buttons. Add some sizzle and spice. Make a razor-sharp pleat.

New York Fashion Week has come to an end. The celebrities have cleared out, the city is finally getting some rest, however, the fashion stays. Keep a lookout for the newest and hottest trends of 2022.
