Top Tips For Making Friends In First Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UL chapter.

First year can be daunting, especially if you are moving to a new place and don’t know that many people. For some people, university is a whole new world that they must navigate there way through on their own. Here are some tips for getting to know people in the first couple of weeks.

1. Get to know your housemates. In the first few weeks, you really have an opportunity to get to know your housemates if you are staying in student accommodation. With all the events colleges have to offer during these weeks, your housemates can be a good group to go with while you’re all finding your feet. Chances are you’re all in the same both so make the most of eachother’s company!

2. Join a club or society. Being a part of a society is a great way to get to know like-minded people in college. Clubs and societies allow you to meet people that have similar interests to you. Going to a society for the first time can be scary but it’s usually a very welcoming atmosphere and a great way to get involved in campus life.

3. Hang out with people in your college course. Obviously this is a lot easier if you are part of a smaller course, but if your course is rather large this can be a challenge. If this is the case, applying to be Class Rep. or getting your Class Rep. to organize a class night out is a great way to meet the people you will be spending the next few years with!

At the end of the day, there is no magical formula for making friends but it doesn’t have to be a daunting experience! Getting as involved in college life and campus events as possible is definitely a good place to start!
