On September 25th, Joji released his second studio album “Nectar”. I was a huge fan of his first album, Ballads 1, so I was super excited to see he had released another album, and I was not disappointed. I’ve given this album a lot of listens, and I’ve narrowed down my favorite, and least favorite, tracks.

Favorites:

  1. Like You Do: As You Do is a powerful ballad filled with emotion about a relationship in which he is helplessly in love with his partner, and he feels that nobody else loves him like they do, per the title. The first time I heard this song it drew me in and became my instant favorite.

  2. Your Man: The final track on Nectar is the perfect closing song. Somehow with only three lines, the song portrays Joji confessing his crush on a girl after her breakup with her previous partner very well. The dancey pop rhythm and elements of the song provide an extraordinary end to an amazing album.

  3. Daylight: Daylight was the final of all the singles released from Nectar. The collaboration with artist Diplo was released on August 6th. The song follows the end of a relationship and the helplessness he feels. He reflects back on the entirety of the relationship and how it makes him feel.

Least Favorites:

While I wouldn’t go as far as to say I hated any of the songs on the album, there were a few at the bottom of the list. In no particular order:

  1. Tick Tock: The third track on the album is about wasting each other’s time by chasing fame and about the lack of communication that leads to a failed relationship. The opening verse is very low pitched, which I’m not a huge fan of. The low volume trap element of the track turned it off for me, but other than that the message of the song and the following verses are still good.

  2. Pretty Boy: Pretty Boy is a collaboration between Joji and Lil Yatchy. The song shows the self-confident outer shells that they use to hide their internal problems from their fans and the public. While I am a fan of Lil Yatchy’s voice, I don’t believe the two artists mesh together too well. I also don’t love the beat. Overall, not very fond of this song or the collaboration.

Honorable Mention:

Afterthought: While this song would be somewhere in the middle if I ranked them all in order, I believe that this track deserved an honorable mention. Joji collaborated with BENEE on this song, who you probably know from the song Supalonely. While I wasn’t a fan of Supalonely, I LOVED her voice on this song, and I think her and Joji paired really well together.

Overall, I thought this was a beautiful album that took you through an adventure of the ups and downs of a beautiful relationship story. It’s been on repeat for weeks, and is definitely one of my favorite albums at the moment. I hope you’ll go give it a listen!
