They say of beauty she’s the epitome

Flawless hair and flashing teeth

But look closer and you will see

A heart that’s filled with only grief

Strangers love to peer into her glittering eyes

Last night they filled to the brim with tears

Listening for snores before she cries

Anxious but others dismiss her fears

Her best friend will make you laugh

Ignore the jokes and glimpse within

Covered in old photographs

Are scarlet webs carved into long-scarred skin

Silently suffering and no one would know it

Spilling black blood as promising prose

Look past the pen to the poet

Hiding dreaded pounds beneath baggy clothes

Another girl makes the trio complete

Knowing every song lyric by heart

Because if no music grounded her feet

The sound of silent screams would tear her apart

She wanders about in a daze

Eyes glassy and half-crossed

The world is a spinning maze

And no one bothers to ask if she’s lost

From afar, their lives are a dream

Many long to take their places

But they’re tearing at the seams

You merely need to gaze past their pretty faces
