3 New Year’s Resolutions Worth Making

It’s the third week of the year and the sound of countless New Year’s Resolutions being broken is echoing across the landscape. Gym regimes, diets, spending restrictions, musical instruments to learn; they’re already abandoned. If you’ve managed to keep your resolutions then it’s definitely kudos to you, but if you’ve yet to even make any, here’s a couple of suggestions for things that might hopefully be a little easier to keep (at least I hope they are, because these are mine…):

 

1) Go To Things I Plan

I don’t know how many people have this problem, but I’ve spent much of the last year booking tickets to things or making plans to go places and then never actually going to them. Not only is it a waste of money but, considering I know I’d enjoy myself if I actually turned up, it’s also a waste of an opportunity. Now, this plan hasn’t been going particularly well since I had to skip out on two theatre trips last week because I basically had the plague, but here’s hoping I won’t be ill for all of 2019 and future plans can stay intact!

2) Read More Books

If there’s one thing you do at uni, it’s read a lot of books. But they’re not books from my huge, imposing To Be Read pile that’s staring at me from the corner. For the sake of my bookcase not snapping under the weight, I really need to get a start on. So many novels, so many biographies, so much knowledge to be learned that isn’t directly related to my course modules. And considering I didn’t get to read much last year, reading more isn’t going to be much of a challenge…

3) Be Happy

I’ve never put much stock behind resolutions like ‘lose weight’ or ‘exercise more’, because they never actually achieve the thing people are actually after, which is happiness. Getting fitter is definitely part of the plan for the year, but it’s not the end goal. I’m heading back to roller derby not because it’s a great form of exercise, although it is, but because when I’m on the track I’m always happier than when I’m walking instead of skating. It’s also a very easy resolution to keep – I figure there’s a 50/50 chance that I will end the year happier than now, so if I put my mind to it then maybe I’ll tip the scales in the right direction.

Whatever your resolutions, I wish you every luck with keeping them and I hope that they all lead you to more happiness, because that’s all that really matters.
