Do’s and Don’ts of Dressing for Career Fairs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

Career fairs are always daunting for students of any major. One thing that you don’t have to worry about with a little planning is your outfit. Your outfit is the first thing employers see and it should express that you are an adult that is ready to step into the professional world. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts of dressing to impress.

DO: Wear something that reflects your personality. Just because you need to dress professionally doesn’t mean that you must lose your personal style.

DON’T: Wear anything that reveals to much skin. Many girls make the mistakes of wearing skirts or tops that are to short. A go-to rule of thumb is to make sure your skirt is always longer than your fingertips or only around 1-2 inches above your knees. If you think it may be too short, it usually is. For tops, you should never wear a crop top unless the top of your shirt or pants is high-waisted enough to cover the end of the shirt.

DO: Iron your clothing before you go to make sure you look fresh. You don’t want your employer to look at you and be able to tell you got your shirt out of your laundry basket in a rush to make it on time.

DON’T: Wear a shirt that is see through. If your top is slightly sheer make sure you are wearing a tank top under it. No employer wants to see your bralette, no matter how cute it is.

DO: Wear shoes you are comfortable walking in. I know we all want to wear those business heels but sometimes they just aren’t realistic. With how much standing is involved in career fair, you don’t want to be only thinking of how much your feet are killing you when an employer is talking to you about their company.

DON’T: Stop in briefly after the gym or straight out of class. Prepare yourself and pack an outfit to change into quickly if you are in a time crunch.

DO: Wear your confidence on your sleeve. If you believe you are the best choice for a company having confidence in yourself can give employers confidence that you are ready to join their team.
