Body Confidence & Movie Review: Embrace

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

I have never seen a movie/documentary that resonated with me the way that Embrace did.

Embrace is about a woman, Taryn Brumfitt who set out on a mission all over the world to uncover why women are so hateful about their bodies. She talked to many different people, including actresses, models, people who suffer from eating disorders, and just normal women walking around on the streets. The facts she finds, and the things people say about themselves are stunning and a bit sad. Several women have such hate for their bodies and the fact that so many people feel this way really makes me think something needs to be changed in society. The documentary does a good job of really uncovering the truths of what society has to say about body image and the results are really fascinating. I highly recommend watching the documentary to learn these facts yourself (which can be found on Netflix, btw).

Throughout this movie, I laughed, I cried, and I had major goosebumps. By the end of it I felt such positivity and I just wanted to tell everyone and their mothers how beautiful they are. In addition, it reminded me that even though I’ve always struggled with body confidence, I should love and embrace myself the way I am. In the society we live in today, it is so hard to find love for our bodies because we’re constantly aiming to be that perfect person that’s projected to us through media. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that we can’t all be the skinny, tall model that we see so often on TV and in magazines. But the truth is, that’s okay because every body is beautiful. I feel like after watching this documentary, I have some sort of duty to remind those around me that they’re beautiful and perfect the way they are.

Taryn Brumfitt has created a blog and movement after her movie Embrace. It is an amazing source to go to if you’re ever struggling with body confidence. (https://bodyimagemovement.com/embrace-the-documentary/ )

In addition, us women need to keep building each other up instead of tearing each other down. By doing this, we’d be creating a safe environment for women to embrace exactly who they are.
