It’s Spooky Szn, witches.

Well, it has been Spooky Season for a little bit now. For most people (nay, amateurs), Spooky Szn starts the week before Halloween.

I really enjoy Halloween time because 1) Pinterest floods with DIY costume ideas, 2) Halloween-themed crafts, and 3) scary movies are more available on TV or streaming platforms. Although each year TONS of Halloween movies, TV shows, documentaries, etc. are released, only a few throwbacks really make me happy. I’m not saying that films like “IT” or the all-female “Ghostbusters” aren’t amazing, I’m just saying that some movies have a special place in my heart. Here are my childhood favorite Halloween-esque movies:

Haunted Mansion (2003)

I love “Haunted Mansion” because of Eddy Murphy. He was in nearly every one of my favorite childhood movies like “Coming to America,” “Dr. Dolittle,” and “Daddy Day Care.” I should probably try to be less partial to all things Eddy Murphy, but I can’t help myself. I also love that Latin makes a small cameo in “Haunted Mansion”- shout out to my Classics lovers.

Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire (2000)

I remember watching this movie and being genuinely terrified. Honestly, it was probably because I was 4 or 5 years old and way too young. As I got older I appreciated the Disney-level humor more. I highly recommend if you want to feel nostalgic for the 90s/00s era.

Twitches (2005)

How can you not love “Twitches”? I have seen some comparisons of “Twitches” and “Halloweentown” on the internet recently and it has me very upset. Both movies are really entertaining but in different ways. “Twitches” is a great lower-level/build-up to the Holy Grail of Disney Halloween Movies- “Halloweentown.” Please don’t compare something Godly next to “Twitches.”

The Little Vampire (2000)

“The Little Vampire” is not necessarily a Halloween movie, but more of an anytime spooky movie. I watched this movie religiously as a child (hence- Spooky Szn is all year round for me). If you haven’t heard of it, “The Little Vampire” is a cute story about a boy who befriends a vampire. It is an absolute must-watch.

The Halloweentown Series

  • “Halloweentown” (1998)
  • “Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge” (2001)
  • “Halloweentown High” (2004)
  • “Return to Halloweentown” (2006)

The entire “Halloweentown” series falls under the umbrella of “great.” However, some movies in the series are better than others. The OG “Halloweentown” is the absolute best with “Halloweentown II” in a close second. Marnie and Aggie are my queens.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

You probably guessed that “Hocus Pocus” would be on the list immediately after reading the title- and, you were right. I love “Hocus Pocus” for the edgy 90s Disney humor, the adequate amount of spook, and the decent storyline. It’s definitely a bonus that Sarah Jessica Parker shows up as a witch too. Sarah Sanderson>Carrie Bradshaw

While I like to think that I will actually leave my house on Halloween, odds are I will binge-watch the aforementioned movies with copious amounts of sweets. What’s better: A Sip Ep Halloween party or a sectional and “Hocus Pocus”?
