February has returned once again and with that brings black history month. You’ve learned about it in school and know the history of racism and slavery, but what is the real importance of black history month and why do we dedicate a month out of every year to reflect?

Understanding and acknowledging the past is how we grow and evolve in the future. Black history is one of the most impactful and influential components to our nation’s history. We celebrate the history and the progression of our nation and society as a whole every single Februrary as a reminder of overcoming evil. A nation that chooses to ignore the past is more likely to repeat those mistakes in the future. We use black history month to remember the hatred that once lived within society and use it as a representation of what has been achieved.

In the words of MLK, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Black history month signifies more than just black history, it resembles unity and progression towards equality for all. It is a reason to celebrate the future and pay tribute to those that struggled in the past.
