“Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11.”
— President Obama
We will never forget the terrible day of September 11th, 2001. Lives were lost, but as a nation we will never forget what happened. Even after 12 years, we don’t forget throughout the world. This September 11th, people at work took a moment of silence. People passed by the memorial center and left flowers and prayers for those souls that were taken from us rather ruthlessly, but we don’t let it somber our mood. Last Thursday, we joined as a nation to give honor and prayers to those souls and the families that they departed.
The students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania were no exception in honoring such a day. Students asked professors in their classes for a moment of silence when the time actually hit 9:11 AM. How did students know about this? Students used social media like Facebook and Twitter to spread the news of creating such a beautiful moment to remember. Students went to the glass window in the library and stood there with their heads down and gave a silent prayer.
On Thursday, students stood at 8:30 AM in front of the 9/11 statute that was built when it was discovered that IUP graduates died on that terrible day. Not only do we care about this important date, but it affects us as students on a personal and prideful level. President Driscoll gave a spectacular speech, talking along the lines of how no matter the battle, we can always push forward. He moved the students’ hearts and sent them off to class with a reminder to embrace today and tomorrow, but to respect and honor the past.
