Signs You’re a Writing Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

People always seem to cringe when I say that I am an English, Writing major. They look baffled and launch into a series of questions and common assumptions about my future plans and what I spend my time doing. If you’re a writing major, you’ve probably experienced at least a few of the things below.

People always assume you want to be a teacher.

I chose a writing track specifically because I could never imagine myself as a teacher. When I tell people that I do not want to teach and would like to edit, they look at me like I have seven heads.

Or that you mean journalism.

Nothing, but love for our journalism majors; however, that is not what I am.

People think you spend the majority of your time writing.

I actually spend a decent amount of my time reading.

When your friends are stressing about midterms or final exams, you’re usually stressing about portfolios and final projects.

A serious perk of being a writing major that is the absence of formal exams in most major specific courses. Reflections; however, are the absolute worst.

Writer’s block is detrimental to your grade.

In high school writer’s block just meant you may not be as creative as you usually are, but you could still skate by. In college, a serious dose of writer’s block can leave you staring at a screen for days and willing to try anything to get the creative juices flowing.

Taking an English course that isn’t for English majors and minors only is torture.

I understand the importance of working with people from all majors, but can I please have a research writing section that is only for English majors?

People automatically assume that you won’t have a job after graduation.

I can do a lot with my degree, thank you.

This major has surrounded you with some of the most amazing people you have ever met.

I’ve met so many talented individuals (professors and students) through my major!

Being a writing major has surrounded me with people who blow me away. Getting to hone my craft with these individuals is truly a gift that I am so thankful for. Hang in there writing majors, people will understand one day.
