Callie M Campbell, Sex Week Chair ’15

When the members of the Resident Hall Association (RHA) became spread too thin, they reached out to the IUP community to find someone to run Sex Week lest it not happen at all. Freshman, Callie M Campbell, decided to take on the responsibility because she didn’t want to see the week go.

Sex Week is a week dedicated to teaching traditional information about safe sex along with discussion about gender, sexuality, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Callie says that this week is important because a lot of this information is mandated by the state when it’s taught in high school and the information gets “watered down” or skimped on, so as to “please the masses.” Callie hopes to freshen it up and make sure it isn’t boring. I was curious to hear what activities Callie has planned for Sex Week and she certainly didn’t disappoint.

“I hope to collaborate with the Health Center, Pride Alliance, and The Haven Project… I also hope to be able to host at least one panel with Internet personalities that are experts on the topics I plan to address.” (How cool is that!? Answer: super cool.)

Callie encourages all collegiettes to attend Sex Week activities because it’s essential information about making safe sexual decisions and becoming comfortable with your gender and sexual identity. Callie wants to deconstruct ideas of “traditional masculinity and femininity.”

Callie’s final hope for Sex Week is that it is “as intersectional as possible to make sure that the week is relevant to everyone.”

It’s so exciting to hear that the week will not only cover the very important topic of safe sex, but also include a dialogue about gender and sexuality. One of the best things about IUP is how inclusive programs like these are and it’s all thanks to people like Callie, who recognize that the world is big, beautiful, diverse place. I encourage everyone to attend at least one Sex Week activity. This week and the topics being addressed are not just important for women; everyone, no matter their gender or sexuality, can benefit from the programs and information being discussed during this week!

Sex Week will be taking place April 13th through the 17th! Make it a point to go if you’re able to do so!
