Name: Samm Hilston
Hometown: Merrimack, NH
Year: Junior (’18)
Major(s)/Minor(s): Biochemistry major with philosophy minor
Her Campus Ithaca College: What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?
Samm Hilston: childish, free-spirited, talkative
HCIC: How did you first get involved with IC Club Basketball?
SH: My freshman year I went to Org Fair and talked to both the club basketball and club volleyball team. I was going to try out for both, but then after a couple open gyms for volleyball I realized the practices would conflict and that I was more devoted to basketball.
HCIC: What do you think are the advantages of doing a club sport?
SH: It’s good to still be able to be part of a team with a coach and consistent practices while also being able to balance my time with my school work. We are still very competitive and travel for games all year and the last two years have gone to nationals.
HCIC: What is your favorite spot on campus?
SH: In the Center for Natural Science on the 3rd floor near the Chem professor offices, there is a bench with a huge window and I really like going there to do work. It has a really good vibe and is right next to where I do my research.
HCIC: Do you have any advice for incoming freshmen or underclassmen who are looking to do sports at IC?
SH: Do something that matches your committment level. If you have trouble motivating to go to the gym, get a group together to hold each other accountable. There are lots of different levels of activity on this campus, and you can find your niche whether it’s on the varsity team, the club team, or intramurals. Any of these options are great way to stay active and get to know people with similar interests.
HCIC: Advice for incoming freshmen and underclassmen in general?
SH: Don’t be afraid to take classes not directly in your major that you think might be interesting. I realized that I loved philosophy and I would never have known that if I hadn’t taken it on a whim. Spread your stuff out! Make sure that a semester isn’t ALL major classes or ALL ICC, give yourself a balance to work with. Do your homework for your least favorite class first to get it out of the way — you’ll thank yourself later.
