Spring Fever! The Best Ways To Do Some “Spring Cleaning”On Your Closet.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

With sunny days and spring break ahead, most of us are facing bad cases of spring fever. Before it gets super nice out, ‘spring cleaning’ our closest should be our top priority to start this season off right. Here are some tips for cleaning your closet… and what you should do with your old clothes.

How many times have I worn this?

This is the best possible question to ask yourself when going through clothes. I have a habit of saying “I’ll wear this eventually” or “maybe I should keep it just in case.” If that’s the answer, then it’s probably a no. Trends come and go fast nowadays, so it’s really important to look at your items and think “will I wear this in six months?”. If the answer is probably not then you should give that item up.

when did i even buy this?

When going through your closest, it’s important to see if you actually are putting your clothes to good use. For example, if you own multiple black tops for layers, maybe it would be best to give up one and save the other so you can add more to your wardrobe. Reminding yourself to think about when an item was purchased and how many times you have worn it is very important when limiting down on closet space.

Will I miss this item?

Sometimes, we can get attached to our clothes. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s true. Some items are so special to us because of the memories, but we don’t really wear them anymore. It’s a sad truth, but try to think, will you miss this item if it was not in your closet? Despite sentimentality, you may not think twice about wearing a shirt again, and it’s important to recycle our items so they are not put to waste.
How Do I Organize?

How do i organize my stuff?

Organization is very important when it comes to cleaning a closet. There are many ways you can do this but it is very important that you make a system that will work for you. Marie Kondo is well known for her tips and tricks on organization. After watching a few of her videos, I have found some new ways to reorganize my own closet. Below is a quick video to give you some inspiration on how you can reorganize!

What do I do with my old clothes?

Although it may be sad to give up something that still has a tag on it, if you’ve never worn it, you probably won’t miss it. Clothes can be given a new chance with someone new. Selling your clothes is a great way to clean out your closet and not feel so guilty after spending money on something you never used. Not only is this a great way to save, but it’s also better for the environment. It has been found that 57% of discarded clothes will end up in a landfill, eventually leading to incineration. This is extremely worrisome as 52% of these items are made out of synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, etc. which can be toxic when burned. By selling or donating your old clothes, you are ensuring that these items are put to good use and do not end up in landfills. Supporting local thrift stores as well as Goodwill and other donation centers is also a great way to help our your community as well!\
