With the series finale airing on April 7 on Pop TV, “Schitt’s Creek” has become one of the most beloved shows on television. First premiering in 2015, the Canadian sitcom follows a previously wealthy family, the Roses, who are now faced with financial hardships. Johnny Rose (played by Eugene Levy), his wife Moira (Catherine O’Hara), and their two kids David (Daniel Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy), move to the small town of Schitt’s Creek. Previously bought as a joke, the town and the local motel become their newfound home as they must now navigate life without their wealth.

Throughout the production of the show, there has been a steady increase in recognition and viewership within the States. After being released on Netflix in 2017, the show has amassed a devoted fan base that is absolutely enthralled with the humor, character development, and emotional connections the show has been able to foster. Unlike most shows, “Schitt’s Creek” has been gaining gradual mainstream success and attention towards their latter seasons. According to Pop TV, the audience ratings have more than doubled between the first and four seasons, and over four million people watched the fifth season on Pop alone. The show was also nominated for four Emmys in 2019 including outstanding contemporary costumes, outstanding lead actor in a comedy series (Eugene Levy), outstanding lead actress in a comedy series (Catherine O’Hara), and outstanding comedy series.

Daniel Levy is credited as the main creator of the show alongside his father Eugene Levy, who also plays his on-screen father. Along with being one of the main actors on the show, Daniel Levy is also a showrunner, a writer, an editor, and a costume designer for the show. His involvement and detail-oriented precision are a huge part of why the show is so successful. The sixth season is no exception with many moments of perfectly-timed comedic relief in the midst of heart-warming situations.

In addition to the incredible writing, costume department, and cast chemistry, “Schitt’s Creek” has also had a positive and lasting impact on the LGBTQ+ community. The love and embrace that is embodied throughout the show has touched the hearts of many and in an extended clip, the cast of “Schitt’s Creek” read a letter written by the Serendipity Doo-Dah for Moms Facebook group, which is comprised of over 5,000 mothers of LGBTQ children. From the letter, they showed their gratitude towards the cast stating, “Your willingness to explore, inform and educate about LGBTQ people and their relationships in an entertaining but respectful and positive manner sets a tone that is often missing… You have created new ways for queer viewers to see themselves represented, and in its own way, that is just as important as the battles we are still fighting. Therefore, the work you have all done on “Schitt’s Creek” has encouraged us greatly and given us hope about the future for our kids.”

Although the ending of “Schitt’s Creek” has definitely been a loss, television and pop culture are forever grateful for the positive messages, cries and laughs the show has created along the way.
