We all know and love Selena Gomez from her early days as Alex Russo on “Wizards of Waverly Place.” Gomez became a Disney Channel superstar as a result of this breakout role and went on to star in multiple other Disney Channel originals, like Another Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program. She eventually expanded her acting career beyond just Disney by starring in other films such as Spring Breakers, as well as by becoming an executive producer for the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and Living Undocumented. While still focusing on her acting career, she also pursued her singing career by earning eight top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and by being named Billboard Woman of the Year in 2017. Her hit single, “Lose You to Love Me,” was her first number-one single as well. Selena Gomez has also been recognized for her charitable work and was appointed as a UNICEF Ambassador since 2009.

Earlier this month, Selena Gomez expanded her list of accomplishments by launching her own makeup line: Rare Beauty. The brand’s mission is to “help everyone celebrate their individuality by redefining what beautiful means. We want to promote self-acceptance and give people the tools they need to feel less alone in the world.” Through this, they offer 48 different shades of foundation and concealer, eight shades of liquid blush and liquid luminizer, and countless other products ranging from matte lipstick to liquid eyeliner.

When Rare Beauty first launched, I was first interested to know how this brand differed from other celebrity beauty brands. I watched a NikkieTutorials get glam video of Rare Beauty with Selena Gomez and instantly became intrigued by the soft and subtle nature of the products and packaging. I received a Sephora gift card for my birthday as well and a week after it hit stores, I ordered the perfect strokes matte liquid liner and the positive light liquid luminizer in the shade mesmerize. The eyeliner was $19 and the luminizer was $22, prices I thought were fair when compared to that of the prices of other brands sold at Sephora. I typically use the Kat Von D Vegan Beauty tattoo eyeliner in trooper black ($21) and Milk Makeup’s highlighter in the color lit ($28) so overall, I was saving some money. I absolutely love the two products I listed above so I was hesitant to deviate from my normal products, but the cheaper prices sold me.

I have also made it an effort to ensure that the makeup brands I use are vegan and cruelty-free and Rare Beauty is both! In addition, 1% of all sales go to the Rare Impact Fund which strives to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and to provide access to mental health services to communities in need.

My first impression was that I loved the packaging. The simplicity and functionality of the products made it both aesthetically pleasing and practical. The perfect strokes liquid eyeliner is waterproof and has over 1,000 bristles ensuring perfect precision. I was so impressed with how smooth and pigmented the eyeliner was, as well as how it lasted all day. If you love winged eyeliner like I do, this is the PERFECT eyeliner due to its beautiful finish and dramatic effect. I was also shocked by how much I loved the liquid highlighter. The angled brush creates a glamorous dewy look and an extremely lightweight and silky feel. With this highlighter, a little goes a long way. It only took two dabs before I blended the highlighter and it is perfect for either a glam or natural look. Like the eyeliner, it lasted all day and added the perfect amount of sparkle.

Overall, I am absolutely in love with this brand between the company’s message, prices and products. I am extremely excited to test more products from the Rare Beauty brand and cannot recommend it enough!
