Get to know Zac Torrey, a junior at Mason who is compassionate about helping those around him!
Hometown: Salisbury, Maryland
Major: Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry
Are you doing any research: I just came in contact with Dr. Bishop on the Science and Technology campus. He does antimicrobial peptide research, so basically, a different form of antibiotics. We’re identifying new peptides and hopefully getting these to the market to help people. He’s in the discovery phase right now.
What made you want to do research: I want to make a difference in the world. I want to help out other people. Right now there’s a crisis with antibiotics and bacteria becoming immune. If we can create a new class of antibiotics, we’ll be able to help out the world.
What else are you involved in at Mason: I’m a member of The American Society for Microbiology, Parliamentarian of Alpha Phi Omega, on the Marketing Committee for Relay for Life, and work as a Lab Assistant in the chemistry stockroom.
What do you like to do in your spare time: I love going to hipster coffee shops in DC and hanging out in the cool atmosphere while having good coffee.
If you could drop everything and travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why: London, because it’s so historical and there are so many great things there. It seems like one of the places to be. It seems magnificent!
What do you look for in a girl: Someone I can have deep conversations with, someone who is willing to do random things at the drop of a dime like go into DC and see the monuments at night.
Is there anything else you want people to know about you: I’m really dedicated to my major but I’m always willing to learn anything about the world that’s outside my major.
Not only does this cutie have brains and know how to have a fun time, but he truly has a big heart!
