Pi Beta Phi’s “Oh What A Night” Raises $5,000 for Night Family

Florida State University is more than just an academic institution. It is a community of well-rounded students who share similar passions for service, leadership, learning and more. Within our FSU community, there are several organizations that embrace these acts each and everyday. Pi Beta Phi Fraternity is just one of many that exemplify what it truly means to unite a community based on shared passion for service and in support of its members. On Tuesday, February 16, the sisters of Pi Beta Phi of the Florida State University hosted a two-hour dessert night fundraiser, and “Oh What a Night” it was.

This event was held to support Pi Beta Phi sister Ryan Night in benefit of her brother, John Michael Night, and the Night family. On Dec. 14, 2015, at just 17 years old, John Michael, commonly referred to as JM, suffered a horrific brain stem stroke that left him with what is medically referred to as Locked-In Syndrome (LIS). Locked-In Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder resulting from a stroke in which patients are awake and conscious but cannot move the body.

John Michael is fully aware and without mental impairment, but sadly cannot move his body or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles except for his eyes. Two weeks prior, John Michael had signed a scholarship to play D1 lacrosse at Mercer University.

In an effort to raise funds for John Michael’s road to recovery, the sisters of Pi Beta Phi prepared an assortment of baked goods. Tickets were sold for $3 on the Tilt app or $5 at the door. These delicious desserts included brownies, red velvet cupcakes, cake pops, funfetti cookies and donuts. Beside each tray, there was a purple card listing the dessert’s ingredients and the name of the sister who baked the dessert. If you were looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, Pi Beta Phi was certainly the place to be.

Purple balloon letters reading “JM STRONG 24” hung behind the array of tasty treats, signifying JM’s favorite color and lacrosse number. The hashtag #JMStrong24 has been used across various social media platforms and in various states in support of JM’s recovery and his passion for athletics. Many have also sent in photos to JM’s Facebook page surrounded by teammates or members of an organization, with each individual pictured holding up the numbers 24.

JM is currently recovering at Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta, where he is undergoing intense speech, physical and occupational therapy daily. An astonishing total close to $5,000 was raised at Pi Beta Phi’s Dessert Night Fundraiser; an amount dedicated solely to JM’s recovery.

Pi Beta Phi sorority surprised its attendees with two special guests, both whom are eminent to this university. Florida State head football coach Jimbo Fisher and FSU President John Thrasher were excited to show their support, seen conversing with students about JM and taking photographs at this event. The outpour of love and support for the Night family has been incredible and truly shows the power we have as members of an organization to band together and create a sense of community. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we are #JMStrong.
