I Promised Susan G. Komen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

A promise made 38 years ago changed the way people associate the color pink with the month of October. Nancy G. Brinker didn’t want to see a world with breast cancer and honored her dying sister by promising her just that. Two years after that single promise, the Susan G. Komen non-profit organization was established to mark as tribute. This internationally recognized organization has been able to reach out to the breast cancer community by funding more than $988M in research. Komen’s main goal is to educate the public about symptoms, getting checked by a doctor, and seeking proper treatment for the disease that was once taboo to even talk about. In the 1950’s, the New York Times disagreed to publish the words, “breast” or “cancer” in an ad supporting a group. Today, this is not the case. The Susan G. Komen organization helped bring the disease to a large audience. The efforts to create awareness about this serious disease has made a significant impact on millions of lives. In the month of October, the annual Race for the Cure event brings together waves of families, friends, and survivors who fight for the cause that affects so many worldwide. A program within the organization, I Am Komen, has set out to raise awareness about breast health. Its mission is to empower women and advocate the fight against breast cancer by becoming an ambassador or volunteer in the journey to finding a cure. So when exactly should you screen for breast cancer? Screening can help with early detection and can lead to a greater chance of survival. Although women have higher risk, men should get screened too. To find out more about the right time to screen for breast cancer, click the following link: http://sgk.mn/2yjzl8F
