The Daily Struggles of Not Living in the Same Building As Your Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Not living in the same building as your friends is a struggle. Constantly making plans for lunch, dinner or a library session is so inconvenient. Picking outfits for class or going out is just too hard to do by yourself. Whether it is Regis to Jogues, Kostka to Claver, or Dolan to the Townhouses, not living down the hall is AWFUL. Here are some of the worst things about not living in the same building as your friends:

Having to choose outfits on your own

Sure, there are roommates for that, but what if they are in class? It would be easier to just ask your friends down the hall! If you live in a different building, you will just have to send awkward mirror pictures and/or selfies to see if your friends approve.

Being the last one ready to go out

Once you make the game plan with your friends they immediately start getting ready. After sprinting back to your building, you frantically decide what to wear. Things are moving along, makeup is being applied, then you get the “are you coming now?” text. Rushing back to your friends, you realize you forgot your bag, your phone and have only applied mascara on one eye. UGH, struggle city.

When everyone is getting in bed and you have to walk back

Hanging out with your friends is a must at the end of a stressful day of classes. Lying in your own bed is necessary for curing stress as well. When the bewitching hour hits, your friends start getting ready for bed and you have to walk back to your building. Can’t I just move my mattress in here?

Walking in freezing cold weather

Walking back to your own building isn’t that bad when it’s warm. When late fall hits you’ll be asking yourself why you make this walk every day and night. During a snowstorm you’ll be trudging your way back muttering, “Why can they never come to me?”

Always having your Stag Card on you

Can’t leave the building without your trusty Stag Card! While walking back in that freezing cold weather, you reach for your card and it’s not in your pocket. Now you have to call your friends and wake them up from their slumber to let you in too find your card. Sorry, friends. Just let me move in with you and this will never happen again.

All of these things are valid struggles, but the worst thing about not living in the same building as your friends is actually telling people that. When you meet someone, they say, “oh right, you live in Claver,” and your only response can be “you would think, but no, I actually live in Kostka.”
