How and Why We Should Minimize our Phone Usage

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

We were all glued to our phones during the pandemic’s lockdown, and that was our main entertainment from us going insane. However, this habit that we have created is unhealthy and not everyone is realizing it. We spend most of our time scrolling through Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok for hours on end. This causes us to forget about other tasks we have left undone. Scrolling on our phone for hours without taking breaks makes us more lazy.

Our bodies should take breaks from looking at a screen and get into more healthy habits that actually benefit us such as reading, meditating, writing a poem, cleaning our rooms, practicing self-care, or even going on a walk. Sometimes even deleting social media snaps you out of this addiction.

Whenever I would delete Instagram or Twitter, it was so hard for me to resist the urge to scroll on those apps; although they were no longer on my phone, my brain kept wanting to go on it. I found myself going on my phone still looking for the apps. That’s when I realized I had an unhealthy obsession with my phone, and I had to force myself to put my phone away and not look at it.

When you break this obsession with your phone and are able to have control over your phone usage, you find yourself feeling better. My screen time would be more than eight hours  every day, and I would be on TikTok up until I fell asleep. I started to put my phone down, turn on the “Do Not Disturb” setting at 9 PM, and read a book. I found myself falling asleep easier and feeling more refreshed in the morning.
