Sheryl Sandberg: A Journey till Forbes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

From early times, business is considered to be a male-dominant occupation. But, with time things are changing and the gaps between males and females in terms of most of the things are narrowed. Breaking all the social and gender-based discrimination, women are finding their place in the business world. They have not only stepped in the basic-level position but also, have made their ways to being CEO, CFO and COO of reputed companies. My idea for writing this article is to motivate women to perform as best as they can and achieve whatever is best for them without thinking about what people are going to say and ignoring all the discriminations or stereotypes they face based on their gender. I will talk about one such woman who with her hard work and determination made her way to Forbes. One of such women is Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. She is an American Technology executive, activist, author, and founder of Leanin.org. She was born in Washington DC in 1969.

Education and Early Life:

With her family, she moved to North Miami Beach, Florida, when she was 2. At North Miami Beach Senior High School, Sandberg was in the National Honor Society and graduated in 1987 ninth in her class, with a 4.6 GPA. At Harvard, Sandberg majored in Economics and had Lawrence Summers as a thesis adviser. She graduated in 1991 summa cum laude. When Summers became the World’s Bank Chief economist, he chose Sandberg to be his research assistant. Under him, she worked in India for leprosy, AIDS and blindness. After two years, she was enrolled in Harvard Business School and earned her MBA with the highest distinction. She was such a talented and intelligent student that she earned a fellowship in the first year of her business school.

Career:

At the start of her career, she started working as chief of staff under Summer when he became deputy Treasury Secretary in the Clinton administration. She accepted the job offer by Summer and worked for him. She joined Google, where she was responsible for Google’s advertising and publishing products, as well as for sales operations of Google’s consumer products and Google book search. While working at Google, she grew the ad and sales team from four to 4000 people. Her Facebook journey started when Mark Zuckerberg met Sheryl at a Christmas Party in 2007. Although, Zuckerberg was not in any search of a Chief Operating Officer, he thought Sandberg made such an impression that in March 2008 he announced the role of Sandberg as the COO of Facebook. She worked very hard being in Facebook and made her best efforts to help company make maximum profits. She looked into various departments of Facebook including sales, marketing, business development, human resources, public policy and communications. In 2012, Sheryl became the first woman to serve on Facebook’s board of Directors. She was named on Forbes that same year as the most powerful woman in business.

My idea to write this article was to motivate every woman to work hard for their dreams, follow their dreams and move ahead with full zeal and determination.
