How to Treat Your Skin in This Cold Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Beat the cold air this winter and keep your skin beach ready during those long dreary months. Here are some helpful tips to keep your summer glow all year round.

Don’t Put Away the Sunscreen

Although the sun isn’t shining as bright as in the summer months, it doesn’t mean that the sun’s rays aren’t harmful. Although our skin is less exposed due to those multiple layers, the ultraviolet rays can still be intense on clear days. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. For those skiers and snowboarders who love to hit the slopes every holiday, this one is for you. Exposure is even greater on the mountain so try using a sunscreen with a higher SPF.

Grab a Drink

Everyone knows that when winter comes it is time to pull out the hot chocolate and specialty coffees, but it is important to stay hydrated with other drinks. Drinking water throughout the day will help to keep the skin moisturized and flush the toxins out of your body. If warmer drinks are what you need then try sipping on an herbal tea instead of something filled with caffeine and high in sugar.

Make Exfoliating Part of Your Bathing Routine

As we all know, winter means drier skin. That is why exfoliating is even more important this time of the year. In order to achieve that smooth, healthy skin it is essential to exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. Skipping out on exfoliation can leave your skin looking dull and weary. Ensuring that you exfoliate once or twice a week will provide you with smooth, glowing skin. As in any time of the year, especially in the winter when skin can be more sensitive, it is important to ensure that exfoliating is not over done and is performed gently.

Hot Showers are a NO

It is very tempting to turn the heat all the way up when we turn the shower on after being outside in the winter air. But studies have shown that this can be very damaging to skin. The fact of the matter is that we all do it, but learning why we can’t is important. The high heat from the water dries out skin very quickly. An alternative is to take lukewarm showers, and gently drying off with a towel afterward. Applying a moisturizer within three minutes of stepping out if the shower ensures to lock in moisture and leave skin healthy and glowing.

Moisturize Daily

Moisturizing is an important part of keeping skin healthy. But it is essential to make sure that the moisturizer you are using is affective for your skin. Look for lotions or creams with any of the following ingredients: petrolatum, mineral oil, linoleic acid, ceramides, dimethicone or glycerin. Also, don’t forget to keep that lip balm handy!
