The time has finally come! That time being, it is almost time to schedule classes for the Spring Semester. Some are looking forward to this while others dread this. I don’t know about the rest of you guys but I am absolutely terrified. Will I pick the right classes? What if all my classes are actually terrible to sit through? Well, I am here to help! There are obviously required classes you have to take for whatever your major is. But I am here to talk about some fun classes that you might not know about.

If you are looking for a Historical Perspectives or Diversity & Culture class:

Stephen Moncol, a freshman here at UC is taking Film and Holocaust.. He shares that for this class you are required to watch Nazi Propaganda films, films from the 1930’s and Holocaust films and then analyze them. Then during class you have a discussion and talk about what techniques the film directors used. You discuss questions like, what are the filming elements used to show you the main point? How does the director sway your opinion?

The materials needed are a computer and a few books. One thing he did share was that you definitely need a good amount of time to watch the films. He enjoys the films, class discussions and learning things about the films that he wouldn’t normally notice. Stephen does say, “You need to be mentally prepared to watch some very sad movies.” Sadly, this class is not offered this spring but make sure to check it out for next year!

If you are looking for a Humanities & Literature or Diversity & Culture class:

Sarah Sikora, a junior here is currently enrolled in Exploring Communication Disorders Through Media & Literature.  During the class, you learn about different communication disorders and how they are portrayed in the media. Each section you learn about the topic, have guest speakers, read a book (not always but sometimes) and then watch a film. The homework is short writes, 4 quizzes and 2 projects. Short writes are 3-5 questions about either what the guest speaker spoke about or about the movie. There are 4 books you have to get for the class and you take 10 question quizzes on them. The books are under $50 all together!

Lastly, there are 2 projects. One is a presentation on a celebrity’s voice and the other is a presentation over a book/movie. Her favorite part of the class is how it is very interesting despite her major having nothing to do with CSD. She likes all the guest speakers because they help her better understand the communication disorder and look at it from different perspectives. Another perk she adds is the class is not boring! While the class is required for Communication Speech Disorder majors, it is fun and interesting for all majors!

If you are looking for a Diversity & Culture or Social Sciences class:

Madeline Foley, a freshman at UC is taking Sociology of Gender. The class is about the way gender is viewed in society and the role it plays. This class looks at the way people relate to their gender and what it means to them. Her favorite part about the class is the topic and how engaging the ideas are. The main material you need for the class is the book called, The Gender Trap. The class is mainly a discussion focused class based on the readings. The class helps people open their minds to new ideas as well as learning more about gender roles!

Although, we only highlighted three courses, the options for interesting classes offered at UC are completely endless. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends what some of their favorite classes have been or even who their favorite professors are. If you are interested in anything, UC probably has a class for it..you never know you might even need for your major! Good luck and may the odds be in your favor as you go and schedule your classes for next semester!
