Sustainable Swaps: Reduce Your Waste This Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter.

The best gift you can give the planet this earth day is to be aware of the condition of our environment and take steps to decrease the amount of waste you produce. Clean out your space and the environment at the same time this Spring by swapping out your less eco-friendly products and grabbing more sustainable ones. A simple way to begin this process is to replace some of the plastic and toxic products you use on a daily basis. Here is a list of some options:

1. Bamboo Toothbrush

Plastic toothbrushes sit in landfills for about 400 years before they decompose. A plant-based bamboo toothbrush works just as well, and you can also avoid plastic toothpaste tubes by making your own toothpaste out of coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint oil.

2. Mesh Produce Bags & Canvas Shopping Bags

Makes grocery shopping without using plastic super easy. Once home you can transfer your groceries into jars or containers and can avoid piling up plastic bags under your sink.

3. Bamboo or Steel Cutlery

Reduce your waste while at work or school with cute cutlery sets.

4. Beeswax Food Wraps

These are cotton fabrics coated in beeswax that’ll keep your food fresh in place of plastic wraps.

5. Loose Leaf Tea & Infuser

You can cut down on throwing away plastic tea bags by making your own blend of loose leaf tea.

6. DIY Cotton Rounds

Cut up old towels or pieces of fabric to use as a makeup remover or toner pads and just put them in the wash when they get dirty.

7. Plastic-Free Cosmetics

8. Glass Food Containers

9. Biodegradable Trash Bags

10. Stainless Steel Straws
