It’s the perfect time of year for pumpkin carvings, scary movies and Halloween tales. This week, I have four book recommendations for Halloween.

Notes: please be sure to look up content warnings for Reverie and Where Dreams Descend. If the book is part of a series, the first book will be linked below.

1. The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman

This book follows Violet Saunders as she moves to Four Paths, New York – where a mysterious beast? Monster? called the Gray needs to be tamed. This book is creepy and such a great read for this time of year (or any time of year, but there’s such a spooky feel to it). There are two books in the series, The Devouring Gray and The Deck of Omens.

Content warnings for both books can be found here.

You can add the book on Goodreads here.

2. Beyond the Ruby Veil by Mara Fitzgerald

This book was just released on October 13th, and it’s fantastic. If you want a book featuring an unlikeable female character, this is the book for you! Occhia is a city run by water, created by the water-crea. After Emanuela Ragno kills the water-crea, she and her best friend Ale must find out how to get more water for their city.

Content warnings can be found here.

You can add Beyond the Ruby Veil on Goodreads here.

3. Reverie by Ryan La Sala

Reverie is a standalone novel that follows Kane Montgomery, who is transported to magical worlds along with three others. It is a “wildly imaginative debut [that] explores what happens when the secret worlds that people hide within themselves come to light” (Goodreads).

You can add Reverie on Goodreads here.

4. Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles

This book follows a “group of magicians [who] face off in a daring game of magical feats to find the next headliner of the Conquering Circus, only to find themselves under the threat of an unseen danger striking behind the scenes” (Goodreads). The second book, When Night Breaks, will be released next year.
