Spiritual Sundays: Say Goodbye to the Winter Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

By Mikayla Mlynarczyk

It’s not always easy being a student in Ottawa with this harsh cold winter weather—I mean, winter activities such as skating on the canal can always be so much fun, but even with that the cold can give us all the winter blues….

Thankfully, shops such as the Bath and Body Works (the ultimate “pick-me-up” store), has found a way to brighten-up that winter blues and boost everyone’s spirits! Bath and Body Works has finally brought in their new summer scents for their candles, hand cream, body wash, and everything else!  I mean, as much I love my “Frosted Cranberry”, “Winter” and “Marsh Mellow Fireside”, these new summer scents such as “Mango Dragon Fruit” and “Brazilian Waters”, keeps me optimistic about the warm weather soon ahead of us, even during the coldest days!

As our reading week/spring break is less than a month away, these scents will get you pumped for those that plan on going somewhere hot over the break. For those like me who are not going anywhere hot over the break and have some lengthy papers to write, these scents will help you get through!

For those living on res, or don’t like lighting candles, bath and body works also has a great 4 for $20 sale on their wall flower fragrance re-fills in these same summer scents!

Not only has Bath and Body Works have introduced their new summer and spring collections, but even stores such as Victoria’s Secret, La Senza, Aritzia, Forever 21, Dynamite and much more have said farewell to winter and have started to bring in more of their spring collections.

A few other things you can to do to help you look forward to spring break and brush off the winter blues:

1. Clean out your closet—go through all your old items you may not wear anymore and make a pile to donate to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. It feels good to clear out unused, hoarded clothes, all while making a charitable donation. You could also sell your items online and this money can be used towards your spring break vacation or your spring collection!

2. Make a list of things you want to do this semester—To get through the cold weather, group assignments, papers and exams, it’s also important to take time for yourself and have things to look forward to. Whether you are pumped about a new movie coming out like 50 Shades of Grey, going skating on the canal, going to Montreal for a concert, or even volunteering somewhere, make a list with dates and times to help you organize yourself.

3. Join a fitness class —Recently I joined Pure Yoga on Gladstone and Bank. They have a one month membership for only $40 dollars, for unlimited classes. The hot yoga classes were an amazing way to clear my mind from stress and school, and were held in a room with a calming, zen-like atmosphere.  Also check out CU athletics for other classes at great student deals. Classes are also a great way to get the best out of your workout, as classmates and the instructor will push you through!

Remember, school, cold weather and life events can always be stressful, however it’s always important to find ways of making yourself happy and lift your spirits!
