The Golden Girls: Living College Life Since ’85

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Since I was a little girl, or in 6th grade, I can remember watching The Golden Girls with my older sister. One of the first times I watched the show, I asked my sister why she thought a bunch of old ladies sitting around a table in their night gowns eating cheesecake was funny. She answered, “Because they’re just like me and my friends.” At this point my sister was in college and had been watching the shows for years. I never really understood the humor until I was a little but still, I thought this show was hilarious and I just had to watch it every day. As I got older and understood the show more, it quickly became my guilty pleasure. The dirty jokes, the quick come backs, the situations these women find themselves in – I just can’t get enough. Now that I am in college, I still watch it a few times a week, but with a different perspective. I’ve realized the Golden Girls are college women, now.

To give you a little background on the show, it stars Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Esthelle Getty as four women who live together in Miami, Florida. While at the beginning they are all strangers to one another, they find themselves becoming the best of friends, proving that even as you get older, it’s still possible to make life-long friends. The television series aired from 1985 until 1992 and remains in syndication today.

To start, their living situation is that of what you find on any college campus.

They each have their own different personalities, as roommates usually do.

Dorothy: She is always truthful, even if the truth hurts. She is also the queen of the come backs.

Blanche: She’s a Southern belle, loves the company of men, and enjoys being the “youngest” woman in the room.

Rose: While Rose may not be the brightest bulb of the bunch, her stories about St. Olaf are too funny to miss.

Sophia: She may be the oldest of the bunch (and Dorothy’s mother), but she’s witty and has no time for bullsh*t.

Sure, they argue sometimes…

But they always make up, like best friends do!

They stay up talking about their lives…

And they usually need cheesecake to accompany the late night talks.

They do dress up and go out, just like the rest of us.

They have rough mornings.

They gossip like it’s their job. Sound familiar?

They have that one ex-boyfriend, or in their case ex-husband, that just can’t let the relationship go.

They work, go to school and try to keep things exciting in their lives.

Sometimes, when they get stressed, they take a dance break, too!

They obsess over celebrities. (Psst, that’s Burt Reynolds!)

They sing along to their favorite songs.

And sometimes, when they just can’t handle people, they throw on their hater-blockers.
