Megan Elwell: Current Abroad AU Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Her Campus American University: Tell us about yourself!

Megan Elwell: I’m a sophomore from Rhode Island. I’m studying Public Health and Political Science on a pre-law track. I’m a member of AU’s Equestrian Team and Alpha Phi Omega! I’m currently studying and interning in London and Oxford, through the IES Health Practice and Policy program. The program ends with a two week Public Health program trip to Jamaica.

HCAU: What made you interested in your study abroad program?

ME: I love to travel and knew that studying in Europe would give me greatest chance to take trips to so many different countries. I also knew that this program was pretty intensive, but would prepare me for my future in public health policy and advocacy. (Of course the trip to Jamaica at the end is a plus too!)

HCAU: What are you most excited about for Jamaica?

ME: I’m really excited to get to work in rural clinics and get a first hand experience of the Jamaican culture; especially how health ties into it. But I mean, also pretty excited about going parasailing and swimming in the Blue Lagoon.

HCAU: What have been some of your favorite experiences abroad?

ME: A lot of my favorite experiences have come from the adventures we’ve gone on. We try to explore the city of London as much as possible, while also travelling internationally! I’ve really loved discovering so many of the city’s hidden gems. My favorites have been the street markets and coffee shops!

HCAU: What have been some challenges you’ve faced?

ME: It’s been a challenge trying to balance fun with work. This program keeps us busy with classes and internships Monday through Friday, so it’s been hard finding the time to explore the city while still keeping focus on the “study” part of study abroad.

HCAU: What was something that surprised you about England?

ME: The grocery stores. We have to cook all our meals for ourselves, and the serious lack of choice at the grocery stores is tough. Also, they don’t refrigerate anything and it all goes bad so fast (plus side; no preservatives or nasty chemicals).

HCAU: What advice do you have for other students who are considering going abroad?

ME: I definitely advise anyone looking to study abroad to really look into every aspect of the program. Know ahead of time whether you get any breaks or days off, and know what your class load is going to look like. Another big one is to take chances and jump at every opportunity put in front of you, you never know what adventure you’ll find yourself on.
