It’s been years since Dylan Roof shot and murdered nine people at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2015. However, his family is once again in the news as NPR reports that his sister, Morgan Roof, was arrested on Wednesday after she posted violent and threatening messages on Snapchat.
Roof was arrested shortly after she Snapchatting messages about how she hoped everyone protesting gun violence would “get shot.” In her message, she wrote, [sic] “Your walking out of the allowed time of 17min, they are letting you do this, nothing is gonna change what tf you think it’s gonna do? I hope it’s a trap and y’all get shot we know it’s fixing to be nothing but black people walking out anyway. No offense ofc buuut.”
Roof’s comments and subsequent arrest happened on the #NationalWalkOutDay, where people mourned and the loss of their fellow peers and teachers to protest gun violence. WACH-TV, an affiliate of Fox News, explains officers arrested Roof at A.C. Flora High School and no students were harmed (thankfully).
The State reveals that Roof was put into the custody of Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center after officers swiftly responded to her concerning messages. The Richland County Sherriff, Leon Lott, told The State in a news release that they initially responded to Roof’s threats because she violated the school policy.
WACH-TV reveals that Roof has a bond of $5,000, and she is not allowed to return to her high school after officers found a knife, pepper spray and marijuana in her locker.

As though saying “no offense” means nobody can be offended or feel threatened.
Regardless, her Snapchat comments are eerily reminiscent of her brother’s crimes and courtroom messages—especially since she references that “nothing but black people [are] walking out” following her hopes that all participants in the walkout out would “get shot.”
Shortly after the incident, A.C. Flora High School Principal, Susan Childs, sent a formal statement to concerned parents. In her letter, she described the situation and even offered her phone number to any concerned students or parents who might need to reach out to her.
South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster Tweet the following message in response to Roof’s arrest: “Potential tragedy was avoided at AC Flora High School. In two separate incidents, students and educators reacted quickly to reports of suspicious activity and behavior to their Richland County Sheriff’s Department school resource officer.”

Thankfully, students and faculty reported Roof’s suspicious Snapchats; otherwise, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department wouldn’t have been able to act so swiftly.
