On Wednesday, the Justice Department appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller to investigate President Trump’s alleged ties to Russia—a country whose interference may have helped sway the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election. Mueller is a special counsel, meaning he’s been brought in from outside the administration in order to do a more independent investigation.
In true Trump style, he took to Twitter to express his disapproval and outright disgust for the appointment. He tweeted early Thursday morning, “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”

However, according to The Los Angeles Times, the White House did release a statement Wednesday with President Trump’s name attached to it that read, “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know—there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity.”
Mueller will lead the investigation into Trump’s alleged ties with Russia, but he also has the authority to investigate any other matters or issues that arise because of this. This includes Trump’s recent firing of FBI Director James Comey, which sparked heavy criticism from all sides. Many have said that Trump fired Comey because he didn’t like where the Russia investigation was going, and Trump himself alluded to the same thing in an interview with Lester Holt.
While it’s clear that Trump doesn’t approve of the appointment, the Associated Press reports that Republicans generally do—they’re getting tired of the chaos coming from the White House, and believe Mueller will help calm things down.
