New Jersey Institute of Technology Student Killed in Attempted Armed Robbery

A New Jersey Institute of Technology student was killed in an armed robbery on Monday, NBC reported.

Around 3:30 a.m., armed burglars fired shots at the NJIT Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house in Newark. The gunfire struck 23-year-old Joseph Micalizzi, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Micalizzi was a mechanical engineering major and a junior at NJIT, where he was also a dean’s list student, according to the New York Daily News.

The shooting took place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, close to both the NJIT campus and the Rutgers University Newark campus. Both schools sent out emails affirming that their was no imminent threat to other students, according to CBS New York.

The New York Daily News reports that Micalizzi’s father, John, said, “I don’t know of anyone who did not like him. He was a standup guy.”

NJIT is offering a $10,000 reward for further information about the shooters that could lead to their prosecution, and the Essex County Crimestoppers Program is offering an additional $10,000 reward as well.
