J.K. Rowling Released a Crime Novel Under a Pseudonym

Looking for a book to add to your summer reading list? Easy—choose one by one of your favorite authors: J.K. Rowling (duh). The Harry Potter author has a new novel out that you can get right now! No counting down the days till it hits shelves, no waiting up till midnight, and no release parties. Rowling’s book, The Cuckoo’s Calling, was released in April, but the news of the real author behind the story was just revealed this weekend.

On her website, J.K. Rowling wrote that she had hoped to keep her secret penname under wraps for a little while longer. “It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation and pure pleasure to get feedback from publishers and readers under a different name,” the author wrote.

The Cuckoo’s Calling is a crime novel about a private investigator who isn’t so sure a supermodel’s death was a suicide. Many of the characters are millionaire designers, rock-stars, and A-listers—certainly a group of people Rowling hasn’t written about before. Before the identity behind Robert Galbraith was revealed, the novel was getting plenty of praise and positive feedback from reviewers, but had only sold about 1,500 copies. Within only a few days of the official announcement, The Cuckoo’s Calling has already jumped to number three on Amazon’s best-selling list—a 150,000 percent increase in just one day! The copies in stores are already starting to sell out, but a second printing run of the novel is on its way, so you should be able to get your hands on one before school starts!
