A Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor is Among 2 Students Killed in a Car Crash

Two Northeastern University students, one of who survived the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, died tragically in a car crash in Dubai over the weekend. The students, Victoria McGrath and Priscilla Perez Torres, were roommates taking a personal trip together.

McGrath survived serious leg injuries that she got at the marathon bombing. A photo of her being carried to safety by firefighter James Plourde became famous after the attacks.

It’s with heavy hearts that many mourn the passing of two vibrant young women. Northeastern President Jonathan E. Aoun issued a statement on Monday about the accident.

“Each were kind, talented young women, with exceptional futures before them,” Aoun wrote in an email to the Northeastern community, according to The Boston Globe. “Their passing leaves a grievous absence in our community and in our hearts.”

“It’s been said that I helped to save her life, but the truth is Victoria saved my life after the marathon as her love, support, and friendship helped myself and my family deal with the acts of 4/15/13,” Plourde, the firefighter from the photo, said in a statement printed by the Globe. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the McGrath and Perez Torres families as they deal with this unimaginable tragedy.”

McGarth and Perez Torres were both scheduled to graduate this spring.
