‘I Love This YA Novel, Okay?’ & Other Must-Read Books from The HC Team

When we’re lucky enough to get out of the endless loop of Hulu bingeing (in prep for a new Brooklyn 99 season, of course), the Her Campus team does our best in finding and recommending some of the best books out there. From dark and twisted mysteries to extremely lovable young adult books (literally, no shame in loving YA), we’ve definitely got a range of book tastes on the team (and we’re damn proud of it).

As we do every week, we took to the @HerCampus story to chat about all the novels we’ve been loving this year, along with the ones we’ve been dying to sit down and finally read. So get a pen and paper out and get ready to add on to your book bucket list — we’ve got you covered all year long with books that’ll make you ditch your Netflix marathons (seriously). Here’s what we had to say:

A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall

$9.99, Amazon

“It’s honestly my go-to read — it’s super light and fun to read. I love, and I mean LOVE, YA novels, and what I like about this particular YA novel is that it’s from so many different viewpoints. It tells a love story from everyone except the people falling in love.” — Edel

Still thinking about this one… and how white my Keds used to be. Our book club LOVED this book! One of my favourite thrillers this year. • • My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me: 1. I’m in a coma. 2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore. 3. Sometimes I lie. Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth? • #deebibliophiliareads #booklovers #bookish #ilovebooks #bookaholic #booklion #bookaddict #bookgeek #booknerd #booknerdigans #bookworm #totalbooknerd #bookphotography #deebibliophiliareads #harpercollins #sometimesilie @alicewriterland

$26.99, Barnes & Noble

“I just got this book on the Barnes & Noble sales table. Pro tip: that’s where you can find the best books, TBH. It’s the story of a woman who gets into a car accident and falls into a coma. She’s trying to figure out what happened to her since she experiences memory loss and has a sneaking suspicion that her husband has something to do with it.” — Jenna

The Truths We Hold: An American Journey by Kamala Harris

weekending reading — “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey” by Kamala Harris, first book from my “My Most Anticipated Books of Winter 2019” list. I’ve been learning about Senator Harris the last few days, it’s been a quite interesting read so far. Hoping to finish & share my thoughts with you guys by end of the weekend. What are you reading this weekend? ?✌️? . . about the book: Senator Kamala Harris’s commitment to speaking truth is informed by her upbringing. The daughter of immigrants, she was raised in an Oakland, California community that cared deeply about social justice; her parents — an esteemed economist from Jamaica and an admired cancer researcher from India — met as activists in the civil rights movement when they were graduate students at Berkeley. Growing up, Harris herself never hid her passion for justice, and when she became a prosecutor out of law school, a deputy district attorney, she quickly established herself as one of the most innovative change agents in American law enforcement. She progressed rapidly to become the elected District Attorney for San Francisco, and then the chief law enforcement officer of the state of California as a whole. . By reckoning with the big challenges we face together, drawing on the hard-won wisdom and insight from her own career and the work of those who have most inspired her, Kamala Harris offers in THE TRUTHS WE HOLD a master class in problem solving, in crisis management, and leadership in challenging times. Through the arc of her own life, on into the great work of our day, she communicates a vision of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values. In a book rich in many home truths, not least is that a relatively small number of people work very hard to convince a great many of us that we have less in common than we actually do, but it falls to us to look past them and get on with the good work of living our common truth. When we do, our shared effort will continue to sustain us and this great nation, now and in the years to come. via @penguinpress . . . .

“One of my favorite ways to stay politically informed is by reading books from potential political candidates. I just finished this book that came out in January — it’s such an awesome read. She talks about her stances on climate change and gun violence. It’s such a great way to get more informed about the candidates!” — Julianne

The Lost Night by Andrea Bartz

$27, Amazon

“I’ve been completely obsessed with this book in 2019. It’s a page-turner if you’re looking for one of those. It’s most definitely thrilling and a little bit dark. Trust me, it’s a must-read.” — Felicity

Now that you’ve added to your reading list, we give you the approval to ‘x’ out of this page and get to reading.
