Get Your Greek On: The 10 Greek-est Colleges in the Country

Okay, pre-collegiettes, it’s almost time to decide where you’re going to college and there’s so much to consider: location, majors, tuition, and social life for example. Love it or hate it, Greek life’s presence on campus is definitely something to think about. While some campuses barely have fraternities and sororities, others eat, sleep, and breathe Greek. Don’t believe us? We’ve taken the campuses with the highest percentages of sororities and fraternities, according to US News, and created the ultimate list of Greek-est colleges. It doesn’t end there: we’re also giving you some insight into what Greek life at these schools is like. You’re welcome!

1. Clearwater Christian College

Of course there aren’t any campuses that are 100% Greek, right? Wrong! With six fraternities and six sororities, Clearwater Christian College is 100% Greek. According to the school’s website, Greek life here is all about giving back to the community, both on and off campus. Not only do these sororities and fraternities – AKA the Greeks – partake in their share of community service, but they also sponsor various intramural clubs, like flag football and volleyball. If this isn’t campus-conscious Greek life, what is?

2. Free Will Baptist Bible College

Maybe 100% Greek life is a little too intense for some of you, but there are other options. Example? A college with 98% Greek life, obviously. This college, which is located in Tennessee, has 98% of boys in fraternities and 98% of girls in sororities. Since Free Will Baptist Bible College is a Christian college, Greek life here is all about creating close ties with people who share the same faith as you. With a strong religious affiliation and 282 undergrads- yes, only 282 students- Free Will Baptist Bible College is great for pre-collegiettes™ who want to broaden their spirituality and partake in Greek life.

3. Washington & Lee University

Not only was Washington & Lee ranked 12th on US News’ National Liberal Arts Colleges List, but it’s also number three on our Greek life list. This school has 85% of boys in fraternities and 77% of girls in sororities.  If you’re craving a super Greek school, look no further! “Washington & Lee is completely dominated by Greek life,” says Kerstin, a sophomore at Washington & Lee. “However, one great thing about our school is that social events are often mixed. It’s rarely just one sorority associating with one fraternity.” There are so many options, how could you not rush at Washington & Lee?

4. Ohio Valley University

Located in West Virginia, this Christian-affiliated college is filled with Greek life. According to recent statistics from US News, 70% of the university’s students are involved in Greek life. But what if you’re not exactly a girl’s girl? No worries, that’s not a problem at Ohio Valley. All four fraternities are referred to as brother-sister social clubs. Translation? Greek life here partakes in academic, spiritual, and philanthropic activities so there are plenty of opportunities to hang with the guys.

5. DePauw University

DePauw University has a lot to offer: an on-campus nature park, a mentor program, oh, and a lot of Greek life. Approximately 78% of DePauw’s boys are in fraternities while 68% of the university’s girls are in sororities. Pre-collegiettes, you’ve seen the movies and (secretly) watch reruns of Greek on Netflix, but does all of that weird pledging stuff actually happen? Cue the sigh of relief because you won’t find invasive hazing at DePauw. Greek life here established anti-hazing rules so you can get your Greek on without worrying about cruel and unusual pledge assignments. DePauw University has 11 fraternities and 12 sororities. That’s some variety!

6. York College of Nebraska

With 478 undergrads, York College is Nebraska is possibly smaller than your high school. However, campus life gets a little bit smaller when Greek life is thrown into the mix. At York College, 70% of both boys and girls are in fraternities and sororities, respectively. This school takes the whole “brothers and sisters forever” aspect very seriously. The pledge classes here are much smaller than they are at most schools. Translation? You’re bound to get a lot closer with your sorority sisters. So don’t be surprised if you go to York College and have a bridal party full of sorority sisters.

7. Queens University of Charlotte

This university has the best of both worlds: an urban setting and tons of Greek Life. Queens University of Charlotte has 53% of its boy in fraternities and 70% of its girls in sororities. You must be wondering, is Greek Life at Queens just like Sorority Row or Sydney White? Absolutely not! “Greek Life on Queens’ campus is very different from the typical stereotypes,” says Reilly Sowka, the president of Queens’ Chi Omega chapter. “Our houses, which have about 40 members each, are all very close with each other and are well-represented on campus.”

8. Translyvania University

Only four fraternities and four sororities doesn’t stop this school from being on our list. At Translyvania in Kentucky, 50% of boys are in fraternities while 55% of girls are in sororities. At Transylvania University, fraternities and sororities are all about hitting the books. “The all-Greek GPA is higher than the all-campus GPA,” says Heather Riley, the president of Translyvania University’s Phi Mu chapter. “We challenge, motivate, and support one another in all facets of our college lives.” Whoever said that all frat bros and sorority sisters do is party is seriously mistaken.

9. Birmingham-Southern College

Though this college may not have many fraternities – only 37% of the school’s boys are frat bros – Birmingham-Southern College is packed with sorority sisters! Approximately, 61% of girls are in sororities at this Alabama college. So what’s Greek Life at Birmingham-Southern like, you ask? Don’t let the placement on our list fool you: Greek life at Birmingham-Southern is a big deal. “I went to Birmingham-Southern College,” says Summer Austin, now a sophomore at Auburn University and HC Campus Correspondent. “There was a huge pressure to be Greek, despite there being so few sororities and fraternities to choose from.” Even though Birmingham-Southern College is not filled to the brim with sororities and fraternities, expect to be completely Greek-ed out if you go here!

10. Rhodes College

With 45% of boys in fraternities and 52% of girls in sororities, we’re wrapping up our top 10 list with Rhodes College in Tennessee. After reading about all of these colleges, it seems like you’ll have no social life if you don’t go Greek, right? Don’t sweat it, pre-collegiettes™! At Rhodes College, going Greek is not mandatory. “Rhodes Greek life isn’t a requirement in order to have a social life, rather another avenue to get involved, to give back to both the Memphis and Rhodes’ communities and to meet a larger number of your peers in a more intimate setting,” says Kristin Wilkinson, the Vice President of PR for Rhodes’ Delta Delta Delta sorority. While there are other ways to get involved on campus- like the cross country team or math club- Greek life is a great way to meet people at Rhodes College.

Do some of these percentages freak you out? Don’t worry, pre-collegiettes™, every school’s Greek life is different. As the acceptance letters come pouring in, make sure you research Greek life if you want to rush (or even if you don’t want to go to a school with Greek life). In time, you’ll find the school with the best Greek Life scene for you!
