Why Choose Stetson?
“I chose Stetson because it was a change from where I grew up in, in Pennsylvania. It had a different culture and atmosphere and I felt it was a place I thought I could strive in.”
“I visited the campus and automatically fell in love. Everyone was so friendly and it reminded me of my home town. I just remember walking through campus on this beautiful day and seeing people ride their long boards to class, lay on hammocks in the quad, and eating lunch outside. I remember feeling like I found my new home. From then on, I literally couldn’t wait to be a student.”
“People should choose Stetson because basically it’s a school where since it's so small you are easily awarded lots of opportunities to excel whereas in bigger schools, you have to compete a lot more like for leadership and getting involved. It provides a lot of community and I feel like it’s a very family-oriented atmosphere. People are so friendly and so willing to help you out with things.”
“I wanted a small school that still offered the college atmosphere.”
“I decided to attend Stetson, because I wanted to become an influence within the community I would be going to college in. I saw that Stetson was student-centered and wanted their students to be nothing but successful, so I decided to enroll! If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t expect to go to such a small school, but now that I’m here, I couldn’t be happier and don’t know what I would do elsewhere.”
“Stetson was definitely not my top choice but I ended up attending anyways. After attending though, I wish someone would have told me how amazing the opportunities are that you get by being a student. If I had known I was going to be so successful within my college career, gained more leadership experience than I could have ever imaged, and gain the interpersonal communication skills I did, I would have made Stetson my only choice!”
A+ Features
“The professors are my favorite because they will invest as much as you invest in them so if you ask them for help they will help you. Whether it be in class, looking for internships, or looking for help!”
“The opportunities that you get when coming to Stetson are unimaginable. When I came in, I knew what I wanted to do after college, but I didn’t know how to get there. The faculty and friends pushed me in the right direction and here I am three years later, a senior, with an internship and job opportunity! It’s an amazing feeling to know that you have people supporting you wherever you are.”
“I love all the involvement and the professors and the opportunities because they help set me up with internships”
“Stetson may be small, but the spirit each student has is unbelievable. Whether it be how involved all the students are, or how many people support our new football team, the student’s make the experience at Stetson an unforgettable one.”
“I love that Stetson is so diverse. I have met so many wonderful people and have made friends with people from Venezuela, Brazil, Austria, Scotland, England, and so many more. With so many foreigners attending, you get the opportunity to make friends around the world… The best part? Going to visit them!”
Needs Improvement
“The administration can be a**holes when it comes to the logistics of everything. If you need help with anything, or if something doesn’t work, you have to jump through 50 hoops for it to be fixed.”
“The financial office definitely needs improvement… It’s unbelievably difficult to get finances in order.”
“I feel like there is at times people can be very intolerable or ignorant. Because Stetson is a small school, sometimes small things are made into a bigger deal than they need to be.
“The food is the same over and over again and it doesn’t really taste that good. Not to mention it has made me gain 6 pounds…”
“The only real complaint I have has to do with the student body. They look at the little things instead of the big picture. You might not like change but eventually everyone forgets about it and focuses on something else that eventually becomes forgotten.”
New Collegiette on Campus
“It was a culture shock because I was from up north but once you get past the home sickness and start investing and joining organizations- mostly greek life, you find that you found your home away from home.”
“Freshman year was definitely my favorite. I met so many fantastic people and you fit in super easily because everyone works super hard to include you!”
“Coming in as a new student is fun and entertaining. You are open to a bunch of new opportunities and you discover self-independence and self-reliability.”
“It’s definitely fun. It’s funny how you think that high school is going to be the best time of your life and then you get to college and it’s the best time of your life.”
“As much as I was excited to come to Stetson, I was so nervous! Little did I know it would only take me one hour of being on campus to make friends with current students, one day to figure out the cool places to go at night, one week to get my class schedule down, one month to join a sorority, one semester to gain complete control over my life, one year to get an internship, and one heck of a college career that helped me land my dream job upon graduation. Simply stated, I wouldn’t be who I am if it weren’t for the support I received my freshman year!”
All About Academics
“The academics are quite challenging, however, with the help of your professors, it’s definitely possible to excel and be successful.”
“While the academics are rigorous, I enjoy that the classes are small and the professors are always willing to help.”
“The academics are tough but the teachers are really devoted to helping you. You can go to their office hours and they will help you with whatever you need help with and will sit with you until you know the material.”
“I have never had a class over 25 people and absolutely love it! I love being in the business school because- well for starters, I don’t have to do senior research, but really because you get hands-on experience in learning concepts that are discussed in the classroom. My favorite class was Marketing in the Supply Chain, and we got the opportunity to go to a manufacturing plant for one of the main suppliers of Key Lime Pie in Florida and see everything from where it gets made to how the final product gets shipped to the stores! It definitely helps you learn in a way that textbooks can’t teach you.”
Learn from the Best
“Definitely join Greek life. It’s life changing and the relationships you create and connections you make because of it really help you to prepare for the future in a way that nothing else can.”
“Coming from a big city, I wish I knew that the area was very small town. There’s not much to do and if you live on campus, you’re basically always on campus if you are an out-of-state student”
“Definitely visit the small self-owned mom and pop stores. I assumed DeLand was completely dead- hence the name DeadLand, but you can actually find really neat things and have a really great time.”
“Buy yourself a planner... or 3... to help you time manage. In coming to Stetson, you are going to get involved in so many things and it’s crazy how fast your schedule gets filled!”
Interests & Involvement
“I started getting involved through Greek life. From there it was just organizations that my sisters were apart of that sparked my interest. So far, I have been a part of the Student Alumni Association, Her Campus, and SOBE, as well as been an RA, and a focus leader.”
“Greek life, Her Campus, Student Ambassadors- I love Greek Life and Her Campus. Student Ambassadors is fun and it’s interesting meeting the people who want to go to Stetson and tell them why they should come here”
“When I came on campus, I was very overwhelmed with the amount of things there were to do and organizations to choose from when it came to getting involved. I figured I would start with a sorority and go from there and it has worked really well! I have joined the surfing club, and skydiving club, and absolutely love it!”
“There is literally everything available on campus. Whether you already have interests or an idea of what you want to get involved in, or you don’t, you can find anything on campus! If you can’t find something that really sparks your interest, Stetson loves when students create their own organizations!”
Team Spirit
“There isn’t much but because this is only the second year where they have had football so the tailgates are extremely fun and we try to support every team.”
"Team spirit is awesome! A lot of people try to support every sport."
"I wasn't expecting much when coming to Stetson because I know it's a small school, but I was very suprised to see how many people come out to support, espectially for the football games. Things get pretty crazy and it's almost too much fun."
"My favorite sports related activity at Stetson is the intramurals that last all year long. All of Greek Life gets involved as well as indepdenent teams. It gets super competitive but that's what makes it so fun!"
"The past few years it seems like the sports teams, Greek life, and music students etc., all did their own thing, but now it seems liek we are all becoming friends with eachother. I like it a lot better because everyone is a lot more supportive of eachother and the school seems to be syncing in unison."
Girl Power
“I feel like there’s a lot of equality between the sexes at Stetson. I don’t think that being a woman, causes obstacles. If anything, I feel in power.”
“I like being a woman on campus because Stetson is so goal-oriented in making equality known within gender studies, I feel like they have done a very good job at educating students about their rights. I also think they have done a good job in speaking about their values so it helps merge our views together.”
“We overpower the boys. There’s definitely more girls than boys and it’s fun because you have get to make super amazing girlfriends but there’s also boys.”
“Girls wear anything from preppy styles to skater styles! A usual outfit for a girl on campus is either leggings, flats and a cute top, or sundress with riding boots and a jean jacket. It’s super casual yet chic!”
Food & Drink
“I don't eat on campus… I wouldn’t recommend it... Enough said.”
“It’s not too bad because there are so many options walking distance from the school. On campus there is the Hat Rack that has Einsteins Bagels and Johnny Rockets, the Commons, and the Coffee Shop. Off campus, there are SO many amazing places to eat off campus that are relatively the same price.”
“I haven’t been on the meal plan since I was a freshman. It’s expensive, and I would rather eat elsewhere. If you do get a meal plan, choose all points. It gives you more options and you can eat whenever and whatever you want and not go on Stetson’s meal schedule.”
“If you get the chance, go to Cooks Café or Thai Sushi… They are both located in downtown DeLand and walking distance from Stetson. By far my favorite things in the area.”
Social Scene
“I think Freshman year, Stetson was a lot more fun. We also had a lot more incidents. Everything is regulated to the point that you cannot do much on campus.”
“The social scene is fun but it is quite repetitive. You find that you start going on a lot of road trips. Being located near Orlando, Daytona, Savannah, and Miami, you start travelling a lot.”
“It’s fun. There’s always something going on and we are close to pretty much everything like Orlando so if you don’t want to stay on campus, you can go out elsewhere.”
“Sororities and fraternities have a lot of socials where they close down bars but they only last until midnight so if you aren’t greek affiliated, it’s not that big of a deal. Most people head downtown around 12:30am to Brickhouse.”
“With school being so stressful, we usually take the weekends to kick back and relax. A normal weekend just includes going out on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and going to Chase’s on the Beach Bar & Grille in New Smyrna Beach or Ocean Deck in Daytona Beach during the day.”
Dorm Life
“The dorms have been completely redone so the dorms for freshman are a lot nicer than when I lived in them. I don’t believe there is a specific hall for freshman, but because campus is so small and all the halls are located on campus, having freshman designated dorms isn’t a big deal. If you are going to choose a dorm, definitely choose Chaudoin!”
“I loved living in a dorm. The dorms helped me become more accustomed to Stetson and helped me build a community within Stetson. Some of the girls who lived in the hall with me are still some of my best friends today!”
“I like the dorms because I got close with everyone that I live with and we act like family.”
Exploring DeLand
“My parents moved down when I came here. It’s a cute town and it has a lot to offer. I’m sad to see it go when I move. There’s a lot to get involved it. It’s really a college town.”
“The shopping downtown is amazing and completely underrated. Stop by Dressed for clothes, or Lola’s- they are amazing.”
“DeLand seriously has the best food. Manzanos, Cooks Café, Boston Coffee House, are definitely daily musts.”
“Sweet Things and Tony’s. That’s all you need.”
“My favorite part of DeLand are the festivals. Whether it’s the Art Festival, Food & Wine Festival, Tropical Night Festivals, or Christmas Festival, there’s always something going on and it’s crazy fun.”
