A Selena Series Is Coming To Netflix & It’s About Time

The one and only Selena is about to “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” onto your Netflix queue.

Netflix is working on a new series to tell the life story of the Tejano music legend with Selena: The Series, which is described as a coming-of-age story. The streaming service has not yet released a premiere date or episode count.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives,” Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

For those of you unfamiliar with the Latina pop legend, Selena Quintanilla was an American singer, songwriter, model, actress and fashion designer who became one of the most beloved Mexican-American entertainers. The “Como La Flor” singer launched her music career in 1980 and was dubbed the Tejano Madonna. Selena won a Grammy in 1994 for best Mexican-American album and ranks as the best-selling female artist in Latin music history, with more than 65 million albums sold worldwide.

Selena died on March 31, 1995, in Corpus Christi, Texas, after being shot by Yolanda Saldivar, a friend and the founder of her Selena fan club. Saldivar had been managing Selena’s boutique in San Antonio, and was about to be fired for embezzling money. Saldivar was convicted of murder and is currently serving a life sentence in a Texas jail. In 1997, her story was made into a film, with Jennifer Lopez taking on the role of Selena.

“Selena and the entire Quintanilla family are an inspiration to many and especially to me, a millennial of the same heritage,” said Campanario Entertainment president Jaime Davila. “Selena’s career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star. I can’t imagine a better partner than Netflix to celebrate Selena and her family’s lives.”

Now that Netflix is finally creating what we’ve all been waiting for, there’s only one question left—who will be portraying her?
