The Next ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ Episode Could Change Everything

American Horror Story spoilers ahead if you’re not caught up on this season.

We’ve seen a lot this season. We’ve seen Evan Peters make his debut… then die 10 minutes later. And we’ve heard Actress-Shelby scream “Matt!” too many times. Now we are exactly halfway through this season and things are about to seriously change in a way that AHS hasn’t dealt with before. We’re about to get a whole new story, or at least a whole new perspective on the story we already know.

Ryan Murphy said that episode six is going to flip the season on its head. “You’ll see starting in episode 6, the show has a huge turn and the thing that you think you’re watching is not what you’re watching,” Murphy revealed to Entertainment Weekly last month. And judging from “Chapter 5” as well as the promo from season 6, we have an even better idea what that could be.

“Chapter 5” or the fifth episode this season saw the end of the Matt and Shelby Miller’s horror story. They were able to escape their house with Flora and Lee intact and we see the “end” of “My Roanoke Nightmare,” conclusion and all. But with 5 more episodes still left in the season, what could the rest of it look like? Well, obviously the show is going to follow the production side of things, based on the promo for Wednesday. But what could it be beyond that?

The Real-life Millers

So, the most basic and obvious option could be that the real-life Millers, played by Lily Rabe and André Holland, are still being plagued by the ghosts from their Roanoke home. Or even that they are being forced to go back to the place where all their nightmares became real. This would allow us to see how they are really living and if they’ve recovered at all. However, this doesn’t fit exactly with Murphy’s style; it’s just a little too cut-and-dry—plus, Murphy said that this twist feels bigger than any that has happened on the show. “The thing I love about episode six as you are watching it is that we drop a huge bomb at the end of the third act, where you kind of are in disbelief at what the chyron on the screen is saying,” said Murphy in an exclusive interview with E! Online. “And then that takes you into another world and the stakes are really, really, really high…The big twist of episode six takes you into a complete other world.” While the real life world would be “completely different,” jaw-dropping it is not.

The Reenactment Actors

Episode 6 could, on the other hand, follow the real-life actors on the show “My Roanoke Nightmare.” This would include Sarah Paulson, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Katy Bates. This would also make tremendous sense as to why we got so little of Evan Peters up to this point. And according to Ryan Murphy, it was worth the wait. “Evan Peters in episode six is one of the greatest, most hilarious things Evan has ever done and he loved it,” said Murphy. “He’s a very big, pivotal part of episode six, playing a completely different character than what we’ve seen him play. Evan is just the best, I love him.”

If production of this show-within-a-show took place on location, could the spirits of the site have had a lasting impact on the cast? Could we see what strange occurrences happened while filming? Or are we going to see them start to film a new “My …. Nightmare” on a new location, with a new story? Which brings us to the next theory.

Billie Dean Howard’s Show

In season 5, Hotel, Sarah Paulson’s character was in the middle of filming a reality TV show, one that pushed her to find John Lowe, the ex-detective played by Wes Bentley who ends up dead after being the 10 Commandment Killer. Could Billie Dean be starting a new show, one that gets victims of “real life horror stories” to profess their experiences on television, with reenactments and all? This would be a pretty big plot twist, and could would bring a huge connection to season one and five.

This could also mean that the show is going to follow another family’s real American horror story. Could the next subjects of her show possibly be the Ramos family that fled the original Murder House? Or another family in the AHS universe?

While we won’t exactly know what to expect in terms of storyline until Wednesday, Murphy’s surprisingly candid interview with E! did give a lot of definites for the rest of the season.

  • We for sure know that the story is completely different starting with this week’s episode. Expect character flips and plot shifts.
  • Expect some major scares. If you’re like me and need a lot more than severed heads and ghostly apparitions to scare you, Murphy said that it’s their scariest season yet. “…because it’s like season one Murder House in that it feels very real. And what happens from now until the end—it’s just a race to the finish, which is really, a very harrowing and brutal race.” Sounds very promising.
  • MAJOR news in terms of who is coming back. Finn Wittrock will be portraying “his most fucked-up character of all time” and beloved fan favorite Taissa Farmiga will be returning as well! MTV is also reporting that Matt Bomer is coming back to the show, although his role is unknown.
  • Lady Gaga’s character, Scathach, has been confirmed as the first ever Supreme. And by Supreme, we mean the first ever leader of modern witches. This term is used in season 3, Coven, arguably the last good season before Roanoke (argued, mostly, by me).

Whatever is waiting for us in this week’s episode is bound to change American Horror Story history forever. Can’t wait!
