Justin & Hailey Bieber Cover Vogue: 8 Things We Learned About Their Relationship

On Thursday, Vogue revealed their brand new March cover, featuring Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber.

The couple has remained pretty private since they got married in a New York courthouse in September of 2018. Now, the newlyweds opened up about their relationship like when they started dating, a dramatic betrayal, and how they remained celebrate before marriage. Here’s everything we learned about the couples relationship:

1. Hailey Baldwin wasn’t a Justin Bieber superfan.

The pair first met back in 2009 after Hailey’s uncle, Alec Baldwin, gave her tickets to see Justin perform. But in the Vogue interview, she denied that she was ever a huge fan of his.

“I was never a superfan, of him or of anyone,” she said. “It was never that crazed, screaming thing. I didn’t think about it in any kind of way except for the fact that he was cute. Everybody had a crush on him.”

2. They briefly dated in 2016, but they’re relationship ended in “a very dramatic excommunication” way.

Hailey and Justin briefly dated in 2016, and things apparently did not end well. While they don’t specify what happened, both hint at a major betrayal.

“Fizzled would not be the right word—it was more like a very dramatic excommunication,” she said. “There was a period where if I walked into a room, he would walk out.”

In June of 2018, the two reconnected at a conference in Miami hosted by Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr.

3. Justin & Hailey believe their relationship works because of how different they are—especially in the ways they handle emotions.

While Justin runs on his emotions and follows his heart, Hailey is more logical and says she “struggles to be in touch with her emotions.”

Vogue continued with, “Friends describe her with words like secure, steady, and strong. Justin’s friends call him soft, sensitive, all heart, ruled by emotions so intense that he has often needed to numb them with drugs, or not risk them on meaningful relationships.” Hailey revealed to the publication that she has never tried drugs due to her family’s history with addiction. According to Vogue, her father used to be addicted to cocaine, but has been 30 years sober.

4. The couple attends therapy to learn how to communicate better, and they even practice how to argue “without being unkind.”

“We don’t want to lose each other,” Justin said. “We don’t want to say the wrong thing, and so we’ve been struggling with not expressing our emotions, which has been driving me absolutely crazy because I just need to express myself, and it’s been really difficult to get her to say what she feels.”

Both agreed that living together in a house outside of Toronto has “been a test,” because of their difficulties with communicating and disagreements over decorating decisions. Baldwin has, particularly, struggled with feeling lonely and homesick in the first few weeks of their marriage. She also felt pressured by the response to it on social media.

5. Everything we thought we knew about the proposal was wrong.

TMZ first reported that Bieber and Baldwin’s proposal was very public. The couple was on vacation in the Bahamas, where two eyewitnesses claimed they saw the proposal.

“Everyone was at the restaurant on the property doing salsa dancing when Justin’s security told everyone to put their phones away, because something special was about to happen,” TMZ reported.

In the interview with Vogue, Baldwin said the proposal was actually low-key and private. “We were alone in a house, just the two of us. It was very special,” she said.

6. The couple waited to have sex until marriage, and Justin admits that was one of the reasons they rushed to get married.

When Hailey and Justin started to date again, he had been celibate for over a year. The self-imposed celibacy was so Justin could deal with his “legitimate problem with sex.”

“I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul,” he explained. “And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior.”

7. Justin & Hailey recognize that they’re young, but they’re also “learning as they go” and are “committed to growing together and supporting each other.”

“We’re coming from a really genuine place,” Hailey explained. “But we’re two young people who are learning as we go. I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s all a magical fantasy…But there’s something beautiful about it anyway —about wanting to fight for something, commit to building with someone.”

8. Justin revealed his super cute nickname for his wife—Baby Boo.
