A commuter train derailed and crashed through a Hoboken, N.J. station around 8:45 a.m. this morning, killing at least one person and injuring about 100, according to The New York Times.
CNN reports that the train, which was filled with people doing their morning commute, went past the point where it was supposed to stop and also slammed through a bumper block—a device that’s supposed to stop trains when they go too far. The person who was killed, allegedly a woman, was apparently standing on the platform when the train derailed.
“From the fifth car, it felt like a major skid,” Jason Danahy, a passenger, told the Times. “A creaking noise and a skid. I was lucky to be on the fifth car.” Other passengers talked about seeing blood on the other passengers and witnessing the devastating damage to the train station.
Another passenger, Leon Offengenden, was in one of the front cars when the crash happened.
“The front car is essentially off the rails … into the building of the station, with the roof sort of collapsed around it,” he told CNN.
The Times reports that investigators from the National Transit Review Board and the Federal Railroad Administration have gone to the scene.
