Ocasio-Cortez Met With the 'Queer Eye' Fab 5 on Capitol Hill to Promote the Equality Act

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) strolled through the halls of Capitol Hill with four members of the “Fab 5” from Netflix’s hit show Queer Eye on Thursday, as the group promoted and encouraged lawmakers to support the Equality Act.

Jonathan Van Ness, one of the show’s five stars, posted a video on Instagram of him and Ocasio-Cortez walking the halls of Congress hand-in-hand, writing that he was “talking policy” regarding the Equality Act with the New York representative.

The Equality Act is legislation that aims to build off of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended de jure segregation and prohibited employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, to include federal protections for LGBTQ individuals and prohibit discrimination based on a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation.

According to The Hill, the bill was reintroduced in Congress last month by Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI), and is sponsored by 237 Democrats and two Republicans.

While on Capitol Hill, Ocasio-Cortez took the stars to visit Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Business Insider reports.

Pelosi posted a photo of the group on Twitter, telling the “Fab 5” to let “feel free” to let her and Ocasio-Cortez know when they want them to “fill in next.”

Van Ness also shared a photo of his castmates and the two congresswomen, writing that he had “never been more proud.”

After their visit, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about her day with the Queer Eye stars, saying she was happy to have had the group there to promote the Equality Act and for being there “to watch Congress pass the Violence Against Women Act & War Powers Resolution to end U.S. involvement in Yemen.”

“Justice happens together,” she added, including a heart emoji.

The freshman Democrat seems to have a budding relationship with the Queer Eye stars. She was seen interacting with “Fab 5” member Bobby Berk, who offered to help the congresswoman redecorate her Capitol Hill office.

In a tweet of his visit to D.C., Van Ness wrote, “We’re making it rain pantsuits & equality in 2020.”
